🛏️ Occupation of the Day: Sleep & Rest! 😴

Did you know sleep is considered an occupation in the world of OT? It’s not just the act of snoozing — it includes everything we do to prepare for sleep and anything that helps us truly rest and recharge. 🌙✨

As OTs, we support families by:

🧸 Modifying environments for better sleep

🕯️ Creating calming bedtime routines

🧠 Educating on infant sleep development

👨‍👩‍👧 Supporting caregivers with practical strategies

💤 A good night’s sleep starts with the right support. 💛

That’s right most of the time my kids are playing through their own ideas and play schemes.

🌈 Kids need that time to expand their imagination, play in new ways, and build indpendence.

🖍️ I am all for setting up fun, cute crafts or activities that are ran by an adult but I do so sparingly. I love them both and I know that they are learning through their child-led play when I just don’t feel like setting up a holiday craft or activity.

💡But if you want some ideas for lazy day activities here is what I would set out as a pediatric OT and mom of 2!

✋🏽 Playdoh with beads to hide in it
💟 Stamps
☁️ Low mess sensory bin
💧 Water table (yes even inside!)
♻️ Random craft supplies with recyclable materials

Has the novelty of those new toys already run out? Are you already back to the hustle of regular schedules, always on the go, and feel like you’ll never “catch up.”

The reality that usually hits me pretty hard is I will never get this time back with my kids. I can so easily get caught up on the thought “I can’t wait until the weekend.”

When I gently remind myself that my kids think each day is an adventure and have no idea on what it means to look forward to the weekend, I am quickly back in the present moment.

So allow me to also gently remind you that your presence is all they really need. Go join their world and let today be an adventure.

Here are some of my favorite family adventures, products, and podcasts that made this year a special one!

FAMILY ADVENTURES:
🏕️ Camping - this year we went to a Jellystone park and absolutely loved enjoying the outdoors (and smores)
🚢 Cruise - we set sail to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas. It really was a trip of a lifetime!
🇺🇸 Washington D.C. - A place we will forever cherish. Celebrated my FIL’s birthday and witnessed a dear friend get married!

Popping on to say HELLO to those who have been part of the CKT community for some time and a big WELCOME to all of our new members ! 👋🏼✨

I am so thankful for each and every one of you and for keeping this positive, supportive community growing! ☀️🌱

For all my new friends, I’m Calli, a school-based pediatric OT, mom of 2, and owner of Confident Kids Therapy.

Here’s a little bit about how I got here…

🏕️ My love for occupational therapy started when I volunteered at a summer camp for kids with Muscular Dystrophy.

🫶🏼 Working with and helping kids participate in activities that they find meaningful and enjoyable felt like my true calling.

​📚 I went on to pursue my passion and earned my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Kettering Medical College.

🏡 I have worked as a home health therapist doing early intervention and in a private pediatric outpatient setting.

🌟 I started my own business called Confident Kids Therapy, built on my belief that every child deserves to feel empowered, capable, and confident in navigating their world.

🌎 My mission is to create transformative products and programs that harness occupational therapy knowledge, supporting businesses and families alike.

Halloween can be a fun and exciting time for children, but it can also be overwhelming for those with sensory processing differences.

🎃 As a pediatric occupational therapist, here are some tips to help make this Halloween a success for ALL children.

👻 Keep these reminders in consideration when engaging in any Halloween activity so we can help all kids have a safe and enjoyable experience!

✨ Remember, the most important thing is to make it a positive experience for your child, so be flexible and adjust as needed. Happy Halloween!
