In some ways it’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years, in other ways it seems much longer. Emotional day today for sure.

For nearly a century Brackett Cedar Park was a place that provided its community with a steady stream of fun events and happy memories - until the primary event space caught fire in December and was burned completely down. The fire killed Hilda Roskam and left Scott Roskam badly burned.

This weekend the community, which benefited so much from Brackett Cedar Park, is coming together to give back to the family that owned the business.

New Home United Methodist Church, 544 Moriah School Road, Casar, is hosting a fish fry dinner 3 p.m. Saturday to raise money for Roskam’s medical care.

“We are hosting it at our church, but this is a whole community effort. We have other churches helping us, giving us people, time and food,” said Kari Thomas, organizer of the fish fry. “For years Brackett Cedar Park would open its doors for benefits and not charge people to be in there. I think it’s time to pay the back for that.”

The dinner is an all-you-can-eat dine-in affair. Plates are $11 for adults, $5 for children; carry out trays can also be purchased for $11. All of the money brought in at the event will go directly to the Roskam family.

“We just want to sell out. We want to help the family to have the money they need right now. Scott is still in the hospital in Georgia, and they are back and forth to see him. They have a really long road ahead of them,” said Thomas.

The fish fry is the first in a number of fundraisers planned in memory of the park. Thomas said a group is also planning a music festival sometime this spring.

First opened in the 1930s, Brackett Cedar Park was a popular community center for northern Cleveland County. The event site played host to concerts, proms, family reunions and other events. Its destruction has left many who grew up there reeling.

“It was just a grew place for the community to get together,” said Thomas.
