Before You Take That Herbal Supplement…

“Natural” ≠ Risk-Free
Herbal supplements come from plants, but they can still cause side effects, allergic reactions, interfere with blood work or interact with your meds.

Not Regulated Like Meds
Supplements don’t go through the same safety testing as prescriptions.
➡️ Potency can vary
➡️ Labels may be inaccurate
➡️ Quality differs between brands

Watch for Interactions
Some herbs can:
🩸 Affect blood clotting
💊 Reduce or negatively increase medication effects
😴 Increase sedation
Examples: St. John’s wort, ginkgo, kava, even chamomile.

More ≠ Better
Taking extra capsules or stronger teas won’t speed results.
High doses can stress your liver, kidneys, or nervous system.

Check the Evidence
Look for supplements with:
📚 Clinical research
🔍 Transparent ingredient lists
✔️ Third-party testing (USP, NSF, ConsumerLab)

Ask a Pro First
If you’re pregnant, on medications, or have health conditions, talk to a doctor or pharmacist before starting anything new.
Make sure when you go to a medical office you communicate with them about vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements/teas you take or use.

We are so happy to introduce you to one of our back office staff. This is Zainab, hard at work as always. When you call our office she is one of 2 people that answers our phones. She's kind, efficient and always works so hard to help our patients.
She was just awarded employee of the month for the department of Surgery too! We are so very proud of her and grateful that she's part of our team.

Happy Monday everyone!
It's going to be a hot one so make sure you hydrate and stay cool!
We also want to introduce you to another person who is one of the backbones of our program. This is Anna. A lot of you won't recognize her because she works behind the scenes capturing data for our surgery patients and she works tirelessly to make sure our day to day operations run smoothly. Everyone in our office would agree that we couldn't do our work without her.

Hey friends!
This week Kim, our LPN who has been with us for 15 years, will be hosting support group. This is exciting for us as Bariatric Advantage has provided 15 water bottles to be given away, and Kim has even chosen a special CamelBak water bottle that she will be raffling off!
"Staying hydrated during the summer months" will be the theme of the group this week and our Spanish interpreter will also be on site.
Please come join Kim on Thursday, June 19th at 5:30PM at 99 Delaware Ave, Delmar in the lobby of the Bariatrics office.

I'm sure many of you know Kim. She's been scheduling our surgeries for many years now. She also has 20 years experience with Albany Med! Kim has stayed late many days making sure everything was in order for surgeries or even to stay with patients who are waiting for a ride. She's a real gem and we're lucky to have her.

Can you tell us about an experience you've had with Lori? We'd love to hear about it!
She's been with us for almost 10 years and we can't get enough of her. She's knowledgeable and friendly and will always go out of her way to help someone. She used to hang out in the back and answer calls, but her calling is definitely to be up front to greet you all and make sure your visit kicks off on a positive note.

Hey Rosie!
This fantastic LPN is always hard at work. Not only does she support our Bariatric practice, she's also very integral to our Metabolic and Peri-operative Support practice. She has worked tirelessly for our home TPN patients, setting up services and maintaining relationships with home care companies so that our patients have seamless care.
