Vera Eccarius-Kelly

Vera Eccarius-Kelly, born on August 2, 1965, in Dusseldorf, Germany, passed away on December 6, 2025 at the age of 60 after a long battle with cancer. Vera was a beloved professor, scholar, and mentor at Siena University in Loudonville, NY. Her dedication to academia and teaching, and her steadfast advocacy for social justice have left an indelible mark on her students, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Vera was a deeply loved wife, sister, and aunt, whose vibrancy, courage, and spirit touched the lives of those around her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Bill Kelly, who stood by her through every chapter of their life together. Their bond was a testament to love and partnership, marked by shared laughter, mutual support, and an unwavering commitment to one another.

Her family ties extended through her brothers, Ralf and Bernd, whose support and camaraderie enriched her life. Each brother brought a unique joy to her world, and they shared countless memories that will linger long in the hearts of those left behind. Their wives, Sabine and Agnes, welcomed Vera into a circle of shared experiences and love, enhancing the family’s bond. Likewise, the Kelly family, including Bill’s mother, Margaret, and his siblings and their spouses, Kevin and Casey Kelly, Brendan and Marie Kelly, Margaret and Dave Plummer, and Maureen and Dave Wadleigh, as well as nieces Shannon Bates and her husband Hunter; and Greta Hansen and her husband Zeeshan Ahmed, all embraced Vera fondly.

Vera was also a cherished aunt to her niece, Anna Eccarius, and her nephew, Benjamin Eccarius. She took immense pride in their accomplishments and interests, fostering a nurturing environment filled with encouragement and affection. Vera’s influence on their lives will be felt for years to come, as she inspired them to pursue their passions with vigor and determination.

Throughout her life, Vera radiated kindness, empathy, and tenacity. She had a remarkable ability to make those around her feel valued and uniquely important. Her legacy of love, strength, and understanding will endure in the hearts of her family and friends, reminding us all of the profound impact she had on our lives.

A popular panelist on the WAMC radio show The Roundtable for the past decade, Vera’s stunning depth and breadth of knowledge, along with her warmth, passion, and willingness to speak truth to power, endeared her to countless fans across the region. Often, while visiting small shops in the Hudson Valley, store owners would recognize her voice and were thrilled at the opportunity to meet and speak with her.

Vera's academic journey began at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she earned her B.A. in International Studies and Spanish in 1989. She received a Rotary Ambassadorial Graduate Fellowship to Universidad Autónoma de Centro América in Costa Rica in 1991, further deepening her passion for global engagement. Vera completed her Master of Law and Diplomacy (MALD) from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in 1996, receiving The Fletcher School Dean's Award for her research in Chiapas, Mexico. In 2002, she proudly earned her Ph.D. from the same esteemed institution.

Vera was a trailblazer in the field of political science. Since 2002, she served as Professor of Comparative Politics at Siena College, where she not only co-chaired the Fair Trade and Social Justice Program but also held the position of Associate Dean in the School of Liberal Arts. Her influential research and scholarly contributions focused primarily on ethnic nationalism and diaspora politics, specializing in the Kurdish communities and revolutionary movements throughout the Middle East and Latin America. Vera authored several significant publications, including "The Militant Kurds: A Dual Strategy for Freedom" (2011), "Symbiotic Antagonisms: Competing Nationalisms in Turkey" (2010), "Migration and Activism in Europe since 1945" (2008), and co-edited "Kurdish Autonomy and U.S. Foreign Policy" (2021).

She led several travel courses at Siena College that were enormously popular among her students. Trips included extended travel with field work in the Maya highlands of Guatemala; agricultural communities in Nicaragua; and in Afro-Caribbean communities in Cartagena, Colombia. She was also Co-Instructor for Gender Equality and Migration courses in the Nordic Countries venturing to various locations in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and Estonia. She also served as Co-Instructor for Border Studies, bringing students to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and El Paso, TX; San Jerónimo, Mexico and Las Cruces, NM.

In recognition of her exceptional work, Vera received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Siena College Awards for Excellence in 2022, the ACE Academic Advisor of the Year in 2018, the Matthew T. Conlin Distinguished Service Award in 2011, and multiple awards from Fair Trade Universities, USA, and Trustco Bank. Her work with the ECAR (Every Campus a Refuge) initiative was particularly impactful, as she established a campus chapter at Siena College and warmly hosted an Afghan family for 18 months, earning a Silver Certification for Siena from the national ECAR Chapter in 2023. Additionally, her contributions in collaboration with the Refugee Welcome Center highlighted her commitment to addressing educational barriers for refugees.

Vera served on the Board of Mayan Hands, an Albany-based fair-trade nonprofit dedicated to creating economic and educational opportunities for Maya women and girls in Guatemala. During her tenure as Board president, Vera’s thoughtful leadership enhanced the lives of hundreds of artisans and students, guiding Mayan Hands as it expanded its market for artisan goods, strengthened its scholarship program for Indigenous girls, and launched a health and wellness initiative—work that reflected her enduring belief in dignity, opportunity, and shared humanity.

Outside of academia, Vera was an avid gardener, known for her nurturing green thumb and fondness for irises and lilies. She treasured nature and often took to the hiking trails of the Adirondacks, Berkshires, and Catskills with her husband, Bill Kelly.

Her legacy of love, scholarship, and service will forever resonate within the hearts and minds of those she inspired throughout her remarkable life.

Ginger Lynch Landy

Virginia (Ginger) Marie Lynch Landy passed peacefully on Saturday, December 6th, at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Born on March 19, 1965, in Buffalo, NY, Ginger grew up in Oneonta, New York, where she was active in her community and schools. She played community soccer from an early age, a sport that became a true passion throughout her high-school years.

Upon her graduation from high school in 1983, she embarked on a remarkable adventure, spending a year in Cape Town, South Africa, as a Rotary Exchange Student. That experience sparked a lifelong love of travel, a passion she shared with her Matt and their children Erin and Connor.

Ginger’s innate curiosity about national and world politics was galvanized during her experience living in South Africa. Public policy and public service were the theme through her college studies, internships, and work in the New York State Legislature. Ginger’s early career in the office of Mayor Ronald A. Blackwood, Mount Vernon, NY, and position at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School prepared her for her life’s true calling as an advocate and policy expert. The highlights of her career evolved over the past 25 years at Hodes & Landy, where she leaves the workplace culture and success she was so proud of in the hands of her talented partner and team.

On August 16, 1991, she married the love of her life, Matthew, at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, NY. Their partnership was rooted in devotion, friendship, and mutual encouragement. Matt inspired her renewed interest in fitness; together they celebrated her accomplishments as she completed several marathons and started yoga practice.

Ginger loved her family deeply. She took enormous pride in her children, supporting their aspirations and celebrating their achievements at every step.

Her foundation of faith deepened throughout her life; and recently found strength and community at St. Pius X Church in Loudonville. In recent months, Ginger reflected with gratitude on the blessings of her life.

Relationships were at the heart of Ginger’s joy. She treasured the friends and colleagues she gathered throughout her life—from childhood classmates in Oneonta, to neighbors, and the close friends she came to consider family. Ginger will be remembered as a devoted aunt and great-aunt who always took a sincere interest in the lives of her nieces and nephews.

Ginger was a dedicated member of the Delmar Rotary Club, where she served as Past President and Past Youth Exchange Chair. She was also a former President and board member of her neighborhood association.

Ginger is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Matthew A. Landy, Jr., and their children Erin and Connor; her mother Molly Keogh, Glenmont NY; her father and stepmother, Michael E. Lynch Sr. and Patricia E. Moore, Laurens, NY; sister Christine Lynch Hamel (James and Diana), Dover NH; brother Michael E. Lynch Jr. and Sandra (Daniel and Mary Katherine), Oneonta, NY. Ginger is also survived by her parents-in-law, Matthew and Patricia Landy as well as three beloved generations of the Landy family.

Steven Michael Omlor

Steven Michael Omlor passed away at home in Delmar, NY, on December 2, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.

Steve was born to Catherine and Vincent Omlor on November 8, 1944, in Tiffin, Ohio, where he attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and graduated from Calvert High School. He was called to duty to serve his country in the Army during the Vietnam War, a time that would leave a lasting mark on his health. Upon completing his tour of duty, Steve began what would become a lifetime passion for photography. He and his wife moved to Chicago, IL, where he completed a course of study at the Ray Vogue School of Photography in Chicago. This began his career as a commercial photographer. The family decided to move back east to the Capital District where Steve continued his photography career. They bought a historic farmhouse in Schoharie, NY, and worked to renovate this for many years creating a wonderful country home to raise their two daughters. After becoming empty nesters, they decided to pursue a new adventure of becoming innkeepers and bought an old inn in Rensselaerville, NY, which needed great repair. They undertook this project together and opened up the Catalpa House Bed and Breakfast. After 15 years they chose to sell the business and moved to South Carolina to be near family and enjoy the warmth and sunshine. Never fearful of change, Cape Cod was the next adventure. They lived there until Steve’s illnesses became too much to manage on their own and moved back to the Albany area to be with family. In addition to photography, Steve had a great passion for music and had an immense CD collection. He loved fishing and enjoyed this the most with his grandchildren. Steve was an avid sports fan with the Chicago Cubs being a favorite, but nothing got in the way of watching Notre Dame football with one of his favorite sayings being “Go Irish” which he made sure all of his grandchildren knew. Steve’s biggest love of all was his family. They meant everything to him and always came first. Becoming a grandfather brought out his humor and he loved to make everyone laugh. Steve was never afraid to show his emotions and wore his heart on his sleeve.

Steve is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlene Marra Omlor; his daughters Vanessa Griesmer (Terry) and Emily Cook (Ted); his grandchildren Nathan Mills and Cole, Sophie, and Jonah Cook; his sister, Sister Jane Francis Omlor, and brother Pete Omlor (Melitte). And we cannot forget his faithful dog Mojo who was his constant companion to the end. He leaves us with an empty place in our hearts but full of the love we have for him.

A mass for Steve will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Delmar, NY, on Saturday, December 13th, at 12:00. In place of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Foundation or St. Jude Hospital for Children are appreciated. Both organizations accept donations on their websites.

Bella J. McCarroll

Bella means beautiful, and Bella Jane Roche McCarroll was truly beautiful, inside and out. A true warrior, Bella lived for more than 30 years with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma before passing away peacefully on November 23rd. Born in Albany on August 20, 1931 to Leo P. and Mary J. Geoco Roche, Bella was the second of five siblings. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names and Mildred Elley Secretarial School in Albany. As a young woman, she was honored to be on the court of the first Tulip Festival in 1949.

On October 3, 1953 she married Walter J. McCarroll, her husband of nearly 62 years. If you asked her, Bella would tell you that her greatest accomplishment was raising her four children, Kathleen Moore (Bob), Susan Bango (Anthony), Thomas W. McCarroll (Johanna) and Daniel W. McCarroll (Jane). She was extremely proud of her 10 grandchildren - Cailin Moore, Meghan Ring (Ryan), Brianna Schroeder (Cary), Kerry Stroud (Ryan), Allissa Bango (Will), Emily Bango (Anthony), Anna Bango, John McCarroll (Emily), Alex Winters (Rich), Ryan McCarroll, and her 10 great grandchildren – Jack, Will, Natalie, James, Delaney, Hailey, Kayla, Daniel, Logan, and Brooke. Her family meant the world to her.

Over the years she enjoyed a number of jobs including pharmacy clerking at the old L. J. Mullen Pharmacy, and secretarial work at Brooks-Byer Associates and the Town of Bethlehem Senior Services. Bella was an avid reader, an enthusiastic storyteller, and an artist who discovered the joy of painting in her 80s. She loved good chocolate, ice cream, dogs, birds at the feeder, and shopping for new clothes; she baked the world’s best apple pie. Her grandchildren insisted on her mashed potato casserole every holiday. Each morning she checked the real estate listings and the baseball scores. Breakfast at Bella’s was a ritual enjoyed by out-of-town guests who were treated to family stories, some of which were true.

Bella was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Mary; her husband, Walter; and her four siblings, Mary Theresa Hooper, Anne Roche Malone, Peter E. Roche, and Catherine Beigel. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Our beautiful Bella cherished friends who were like family to her. We’re grateful for her wonderful neighbors, especially Bill Hogan who visited daily. Thanks to her medical team at NYOH: Dr. Mohamad Younes, Dr. Peter Lamparello, and Family Nurse Practitioner, Yassah Sim. We’re grateful to hospice angels, Janine and Garth, who brought such comfort and kindness. Niece Claire McDermott provided laughter and expert nursing care for many years as well. And Bella’s devoted care-givers, Betzy and Gladys, went above and beyond every day, showering her with love and affection and attending to her every need.

We will be celebrating Bella’s lifetime of love at her funeral mass to be held on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at 11 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. In lieu of flowers we ask that you remember her with a warm smile towards a stranger or offer a gesture of kindness to someone in need.

While raising her children, Sandy was active in her church and its many activities. Sandy was a talented crafter; quilting, sewing Halloween costumes, painting, cross-stitching and so many more! Her home is filled with the beautiful works she created, many of which she lovingly shared with her family, who will cherish them always. Family vacations on the beach and camping trips were some of her happiest times.

Sandy and her husband, George, enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and later spending winters in Florida. In the summer, if she wasn’t swimming, she could be found on a nearby golf course with her golfing buddies or tending to her flower gardens and landscaping.

Sandy was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Community Church and most recently attended Kings Chapel. She loved the Lord and shared her faith with others.

Daniel P. Long

Daniel P. Long (4/26/1966- 11/13/2025) passed away on November 13, 2025 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dan “King D” was born and raised in Nanuet, New York. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Long and Winifred Long, his brother John Long (Liz) and his nephew Ryan Long. He is survived by his siblings Jo-Ann Long (Jim Georgia), Timothy Long, Joseph Long II (Barbara), Winifred Long Slawson and Mary Long. He is also survived by his nephews Ethan Long (Lucy), Leland Slawson (Jo Ellen) and Paul Slawson and his nieces Emily Slawson and Olivia Slawson.

Dan was a wonderful brother and always available for his siblings and their family. He was a fun uncle and the most loyal of friends to the many he formed over the years. He was known for his unmatched sense of humor that left those around him laughing often. Above all he was a caring and loving son to his parents. In their later years he took care of all their needs, took them on their final trips and made each day a fun one.

Given his degrees and his passion for international travel it was no surprise he pursued a career in the import export business. After learning the ropes at Dorian Drake, Dan and a friend started DL Imports focused on facilitating business between the USA and the countries of South America. Looking to return to family in the Albany area to spend time primarily with his parents Dan worked as a legislative assistant for Featherstonhaugh, Wiley and Clyne, LLC. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to his next challenge as the head of Retail and Wholesale sales for the local family business Rad Soap. Dan met the family at a local farmers market where he fell in love with their products and saw an opportunity to help them grow their sales channels. More recently Dan went to work at the Honest Weight Co Op a client of Rad Soap.

Dan was a contrarian who questioned everything conventional and pursued deep research before accepting the popular view. His contrarian nature was only surpassed by his passion for the things and people that were most dear to him. These qualities made him a great friend and fierce advocate. He fought his illness with that same passion. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Community Hospice for their help and compassion in caring for Dan.

Visitation will be held at Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar from 10 am to 11:30 am immediately followed by a short service on Friday, November 21, 2025. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to Community Hospice.
