Did you know that good sleep is essential for good health?

Nutrition and Sleep are two interconnected topics, and on , conversations about the importance of quality sleep habits are emphasized.

What we eat (or don't), can affect our sleep quality. Poor sleep can increase our risk of developing chronic conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

When we are sleep-deprived, we often crave high-calorie foods of low nutrient value, thus impacting our nutrition. Eating a variety of healthful foods from all food groups along with regular exercise can promote better sleep.

Happy National Nutrition Month!
This year's theme is "Beyond the Table", to promote and discuss the topics of farming and sustainability, food production, distribution and availability, food safety, and more. It also promotes focusing on how we eat; as people, families and cultures.

Week 1's tip is "Staying nourished on any budget", by adopting/using the following tips:
1. Learn cooking, food preparation and meal planning skills.
2. Use a grocery list and shop sales when purchasing food.
3. Learn about community resources such as SNAP, WIC and local food banks.
4. Practice home food safety.

Do you consume enough dietary fiber?

Fiber is an essential nutrient that can help improve blood cholesterol, and lower your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and type II diabetes. It is also helpful in promoting good gut health and weight management.

The average adult female needs approximately 25g of dietary fiber daily, while the average adult male needs approximately 38g of dietary fiber daily. Exact amounts vary, yet many Americans do not consume sufficient daily fiber.

Sources include fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.
Food sources are typically more beneficial than a supplement, yet you can discuss this with your doctor or dietitian if you think a supplement is warranted.

Make sure to increase dietary fiber slowly to allow your body to adjust, and to ensure you are also adequately hydrating!

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, (2nd edition) recommends how much physical activity we need to be healthy.
The guidelines are based on current scientific evidence supporting the connections between physical activity, overall health and well-being, disease prevention and quality of life. www.health.gov

Nutrition and physical activity go together like eggs and toast, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs... and the list goes on.

Take care of your body both physically and mentally with exercise! As tolerated, and with cardiac clearance if you have heart issues.
