Stress reactions actually run on a continuum. Acute stress, while always short-term, can be due to a mild event or an intense one, and the residual effect varies, too.
Episodic acute stress from repeated events can turn into a lifestyle. Often when we talk about “type-A personalities” we’re actually seeing this type of stress reaction.
Chronic stress sometimes doesn’t even register as stress because it’s so embedded in our lifestyle. (Chronic stressors just as severe as acute stressors. The difference is that the stressor is continuously present).
No matter how mild, though, chronic stress is the most likely to have a significant impact on our health. I’ll talk more about why that is in a post that’s coming up.
Knowing what type of stress you’re dealing with can help you pick the best ways to manage it. So is the stress you’re under acute, episodic, chronic, or a combination? @ Delray Beach, Florida
