Did you know that cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women around the world?

Cervical cancer develops when abnormal cells develop in the cervix and can progress into cancer over time if it’s untreated.

🦠 Nearly all cervical cancer is caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV is a group of more than 150 viruses that are highly contagious and very common. Nearly 85% of all people will be infected with HPV during their lifetime.

Prevention can begin now.

January is cervical cancer awareness month. 🤍
Make an appointment for your cervical cancer screening by contacting your women’s health or primary care provider.

Snow happens, but injuries don’t have to! ❄️

When was the last time you heard a neighbor or family member note they’ve strained their backs or hurt themselves while shoveling?

⚠️ Shoveling snow can strain the body and even trigger medical emergencies.

You’ve probably heard about the importance of not buckling in a baby or child with a puffy coat, but did you know this also applies to adults?

Yep! We get it. It’s cold outside and you want to stay as warm as possible, especially when getting into a cold car. 🚗

❄️ What’s important to know is that bulky layers from puffy coats or other fluffy winter items create space between the body and seatbelt. This can limit how effective your seatbelt is in the event of a crash. The strap on your seat belt should lay flush against your body to function properly.

Is this information new to you? Comment “YES” if it’s new to you, and share to help spread the word!

How you can avoid being one of the 50,000 people in the U.S. who visit the emergency department each year due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning:

🚨 Schedule an annual check-up for your furnace and hot water heater.
It’s important to have all gas-fired furnaces and hot water heaters checked by heating and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. Furnaces can crack and exhaust vents can become obstructed.

🚨 Make sure your home has a battery-operated or battery back-up carbon monoxide alarm and monitor. Check or replace the detector’s battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.

🚨 Replace your carbon monoxide alarms every 5 years.

🚨 Be aware of symptoms. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be lethal, sometimes with no advance sign of trouble. This is especially true when people are exposed during their sleep and are unaware or unable to call for help.

🚨 Check any chimney flues for blockage.

🚨 Don’t keep cars running in enclosed spaces, like garages.

If you suspect you have been exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, leave the area immediately and seek medical attention.

🧪 Your labs tell the story of your health—but only if you know which ones matter for you.
Dr. Sydney LeGuyader, outpatient primary care doctor at Intermountain Health, reminds us:
✨ Labs aren’t one-size-fits-all.
✨ They help catch issues early and guide your wellness journey.
✨ The most important step? Building a strong relationship with your primary care provider so you know exactly which labs to order and why.
👩‍⚕️ Your health is personal. Your labs should be too.
💬 Talk with your provider today and make sure your labs are working for you

Get ready: E-bikes are on the rise for many Christmas wish lists. 🚲

These trendy electric and battery powered bikes come in a variety of types. They range in look and can go up to 40 miles per hour speeds.

🚨Trauma data from Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital campuses in Utah have found a 66.7% increase in e-bike-related injuries among children and teens in the past year. High-speed incidents and lack of helmet use are contributing factors to these serious injuries.

To better educate and empower you to make good safety decisions for your future riders, consider these tips:

🚲 Follow all state laws and local ordinances.
🚲 Wear a helmet, every ride, every time, and make sure it fits properly. Ensure the type of helmet aligns with the e-bike’s classification.
🚲 Supervise riders under age 14.
🚲 Follow traffic laws and ride with traffic. Stop at stop signs and red lights, and yield to pedestrians.
🚲 Stay alert and don't use phones or headphones.
🚲 Check the e-bike’s brakes, tires, and lights before riding.
🚲 Wear bright or reflective clothing.
🚲 Use front and rear lights.

E-bike laws vary from state to state, though most classify e-bikes in three categories, depending how fast they can go with and without pedaling.

✨ There is hope when fighting diabetes! ✨
Brooke, a registered dietitian with Intermountain Health, reminds us that managing diabetes doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right tools and mindset, you can take control of your health. 💙

Here are five simple steps Brooke recommends:
1️⃣ Get your hemoglobin A1C levels checked– Keep track to understand how food and activity affect your levels.
2️⃣ Eat balanced meals – Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and veggies.
3️⃣ Stay active – Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days.
4️⃣ Lose weight - a modest amount, losing between 5-7% of your body weight, can significantly improve blood sugar control
5️⃣ Take medications as prescribed – Consistency is key to keeping your body in balance.

💡 Brooke’s message: You are not alone. Small steps add up to significant changes.

Today we celebrate the courage, vision, and unbreakable spirit that built our nation. On this day in 1776, a bold idea took shape- that freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness are rights worth fighting for.

As we gather with friends and family, light up the sky with fireworks, and wave our flags high- let’s take a moment to remember the sacrifice made and the strength and courage it took to claim our independence. Stay safe - stay hydrated- and remember kindness can go a long way!
