An incredible new study found that pregnant women who consume just 6 dates a day in the 4 weeks leading up to their due date were 74% more dilated upon their arrival to the hospital, had a 77% shorter first stage of labor and a 42% lower rate of caesarean sections.

Eating dates in the late stages of pregnancy lead to higher cervical dilation upon hospital admission because the fruit contains nutrients that influence oxytocin receptors, preparing the cervix and uterus for labor by increasing muscle response to oxytocin and other labor-supporting hormones. Dates are a rich source of energy from natural sugars and fats and also contain prostaglandins, which contribute to cervical ripening. Additionally, they provide serotonin, calcium, and tannins, which contribute to powerful uterine contractions.

Eating dates in the late stages of pregnancy shortens the first stage of labor due to their ability to stimulate the production of prostaglandins, which promote cervical ripening (softening and thinning of the cervix) and increase uterine contractions. Dates also contain tannins, which have a similar effect, and provide a natural sugar source for energy during labor. Some studies even suggest that dates can increase uterine sensitivity to oxytocin, leading to more effective contractions and a quicker and smoother labor process.

These actions are also the exact reason why women who eat dates in the late stages of pregnancy and far less likely to need a c-section!

The most common recommendation is for women to begin eating 6 dates a day starting in their 37th week of pregnancy.

If you've been following my posts from the last week, you've seen a lot of discussion about iron and preeclampsia, particularly the connection between elevated iron levels and preeclampsia.

I think it's important as you read these to understand what ferritin is, and how it's regulated.

Ferritin is our bodies stored iron. Remember, iron is toxic, and its levels in the bloodstream and in the cells are tightly regulated. Part of that regulation is the storage of ferritin. Ferritin neutralizes the toxicity of iron

Ferritin doesn't just increase when we have a lot of iron; it can also increase when we have conditions like inflammation. If the cells are inflamed, the last thing they want is more inflammation. And iron produces inflammation. In cases of oxidative stress, ferritin levels increase. You often see this in people fighting a viral illness. Their ferritin levels will rise. Once their immune system has fought off the virus, their ferritin levels go back to normal. Meaning the cells are no longer sequestering iron to protect the cells from additional stress.

As we examine studies that discuss elevated ferritin levels and preeclampsia, we must also recognize that preeclampsia is a state of oxidative stress. While elevated ferritin may not be an actual marker of excessive iron intake or true iron overload, but rather a sign of inflammation, the goal is still to protect the cells from inflammation. In this case, avoiding an iron supplement also helps prevent unnecessary oxidative stress.

The goal in this case is to reduce cellular oxidative stress and inflammation so that the body does not need to sequester and store iron as ferritin.

Let's talk about the microbiome! We often hear about how dirty untidy homes can be a hazard to babies, and wouldn't you rather have a nice clean hospital bed. The reality is that sterility is not an ideal birth space, and that the bacteria that do survive in the hospital setting are dangerous. Birth at home sets you and baby up for a diverse and robust microbiome.

Myth: "Hospitals are cleaner"
Fact: The microbiome of your home is safer than hospital microbes.

A New Chapter From Our Hearts to Yours

Dear families and friends,

We are excited to share a meaningful transition for our practice—one that brings us closer to the heart of why we became midwives in the first place. Beginning this season, we will be offering home birth services exclusively. Home birth has always held a special place in our hearts, and we are so honored to walk beside families in the sacred space of their own homes.

To ensure each family receives the deep, individualized care they deserve, we will be accepting only 1–2 clients per month. This will allow us to provide truly all-inclusive, concierge-style midwifery care—supporting you with the highest level of attention and love through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Our beloved midwife Anita will also be joining 3 Sisters Midwifery in Waco for those seeking a birth center experience. We believe this balance will allow Anita to continue giving wholeheartedly to the families she serves while also enjoying rest and precious time with her own family.

To our cherished repeat clients: Please reach out to us directly for your personalized rates—we would be honored to support you again.

We’re so grateful for your continued trust and love, and we look forward to this beautiful new chapter in our journey together.

With all our hearts,
Your Midwifery Team
