Some children with ADHD grow up hearing far more correction than encouragement.

“Sit still.”
“Stop interrupting.”
“Pay attention.”
“You forgot again.”

Over time, the brain starts to expect criticism before anything else. Psychologists call this negative brain bias — when the brain becomes wired to notice mistakes, disapproval, or what went wrong before it notices what went right.

This isn’t because a child is negative.
It’s because their brain has learned to stay alert for correction.

And when a child starts expecting to get things wrong, it can quietly shape their confidence, their emotions, and the story they tell themselves about who they are.

Understanding this helps us change the balance. Because what ADHD children often need most is not fewer boundaries — but more moments where their effort, creativity, humour, and persistence are truly seen.

If this resonates with your experience, you’re not alone.
