My 8 year old son Jaxsen Kash was just diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on Wednesday January 27, 2021. So I created this page to share our journey with our friends and family and to have and share the wonderful support group we have stumbled upon. To start I will tell you how we got here...

Jaxsen had not been feeling well for a few weeks but didn't seem like he was showing any signs of nothing more than an upset tummy and a sinus infection. Two weeks in a row he was sent home from school on Thursday from throwing up after lunch. Two weeks in a row we went to see his pediatrician on Friday afternoon, the second Friday she did a Covid 19 test on him and results came back the following Monday morning POSITIVE! So as a precaution all other family members went and got tested and theirs all came back negative. I scheduled an appointment for me and thought "what the heck I'll take Jaxsen for a 2nd test". Mind you these were rapids done by a local laboratory service...he and I both came back NEGATIVE!! So I called the pediatrician and told her the results and she assured me that a positive is a positive and to continue quarentining with Jaxsen. One of my main concerns was that Jaxsen was continuously vomiting and wasn't holding down food or liquids and to keep him hydrated and nourished, so she called in some phenergan and said that if it continues after taking the medication to take him to the local ER. Now, as a Mom of a healthy son I didn't have a clue as to what was gonna happen over the next 24hours! Around 12:30am he begged me to let him take a shower (after already taking a bath that evening) so I did although my patience were wearing thin because I was sooo tired. He is very independent so shower routine is simply him washing himself and getting out so that he did. He laid down in the bed with me and was complaining that his back was hurting so I put a pillow behind him and asked if he wanted the heating pad in which he declined and said he was hot and wanted to be by the A\C unit on Dad's side of the bed. Around 2:30am he woke me up and told me he had to go potty and so I told him go ahead. As exhausted as I was I must have dozed off at what point I hear him tell me, "Mom, I think I'm just gonna lay here on the floor to sleep." I IMMEDIATELY jumped up and Jaxsen was on the floor!! So I got him up and took him into my bathroom because he had to pee, called for my husband who was asleep on the couch (quarentining from us) and as he came into the bedroom Jaxsen was throwing up on the floor. My husband tried helping him and noticed he was NOT RIGHT!! We got dressed and hurried to the local hospital 2 miles down the road. Because Jaxsen tested positive he was put in the Covid Unit. Blood work was done and labs came back that he was negative but his blood sugar was 1058, he was in complete DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis)!!!! We live in a small town so they had Children's Hospital in Plano Tx come transport him via ambulance to their hospital 45 minutes away. THANK GOD!!! After spending 5 days at Children's Hospital, going through diabetic training, nutrition crash course, and some experiencing the wonderful nurses and doctors taking great care of him we were sent home. SCARED!!!! WE had to do glucose testing, insulin shots, carb counting, and what WE had to do at home without professional help was so overwhelming and mind blowing to know Jaxsen depended on us to keep him alive! So there it is, there is OUR STORY, JAXSEN'S JOURNEY!!! It starts NOW. Please feel free to give Type 1 Diabetic helpful hints, tips and pointers. If you are in need of support stay here, comment, post, share. Let's start this JOURNEY together in hopes of finding a cure!! *-*- Any money raised will go to medical supplies and things needed to help feed Jaxsen the correct foods, money will help with the gas to make it to his drs appointment in Dallas and Plano which we live a good ways away from them, including toll pays. Also for keytone testing syrups, extra glucose testing straps, alcohol wipes, pen needles insurance does not pay for at this time. Any extra money will be donated to Finding a Cure! This too shall pass! God is with us!

I just can't rn!! Jaxsen DID IT!! Insulin pump site change tonight in THE BELLY!!! I CAN NOT be more proud of him. This is HUGE in the Juvenile Diabetes world of ours. 9 months on his Tandem Tslim Pump and 1 year and 11 months of his whole Type 1 Diabetes journey Jackie DID IT!! He was so scared but so brave, he inspires and impresses me with each step forward he takes. This is not easy by any means for anyone big or small but with our Lord Savior Jesus Christ we can do anything. Jaxsen tonight you are the bravest and toughest kid I know. You make me proud everyday with your accomplishments but tonight you have this Mama crying with tears of triumph and I'm so proud of you son! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

Jaxsen has had a high blood sugar leves (662 by finger stick; highset so far)l and has moderate ketones (at least every 36 hours) He threw up this morning. So we give him an insulin from a pen and it brought him down. We dose for meals as usual and he sky rockets..☹️ what's happening!?!
😭 his infusion site cannula was bent sideways and had came out of his arm. Pretty sure it happened Friday night when we were hanging out with the crew eating crawfish. So we are drinking and flushing, drinking and flushing! Last check 552 gave him correction units still reading off the scale. Pray for Jaxsen tonight yall. πŸ™πŸ»

Well Jaxsen has not had any injections since breakfast on Friday!! He is doing great with his insulin pump! He has even given himself his own insulin with the information he must enter in pump receiver all by himself!!! This sure is A LOT and I still have to wake up at 12am and 3 am for the next 4-6 weeks to record info and to check his blood sugar and give insulin as needed. All we have to do to is make sure the fast acting insulin is (novalog) is always always on onboard and works with his pancreas to do work right and together with ease and accuracy. We are longer using Lantus (long acting) at this time . So here a few pics of our 1st days with Jaxsen and the Tslim Insulin Pump. 1st nights! Oh and he's already caught 2 unicorns (100 bg), a "perfect bg" within the 1st 24 hours.

Day/Night #1
Welp...here we go folks! A new Tslim/Tandem Insulin Pump user!!! He was mad and worried when falling asleep obviously by the look on his face, lol. We are super excited but super nervous! Jaxsen is VERY scared of tummy/torso insertion sites bc at diagnosis while in the hospital he had a bad experience with the shock of his 1st injection of insulin to the tummy. So we have it inserted on the back of his arm, which is where his Dexcom sensor is always inserted. This is just his comfort spot rn and thats ok. He's so scared he's gonna pull the tube while sleeping and it's gonna make the cannula (plastic needle/straw) disconnect or come loose. We aren't "live" yet (using saline) but will go Live on Friday morning with insulin. Don't worry, he's still getting his insulin injections like normal, this is just too help him get used to wear it for a few days before we get down to business. πŸ™ƒ
Lord, please give my baby the strength to overcome fears of the unknown and help him be so brave during this battle.
I look back a year ago at DX and think about how I wondered how the hell I was gonna be able to keep my child alive and get past this"honeymoon phase"? Now I look into the future a year from now... and see hope, freedom, and inspiration that for now we are on a pump knowing there are soooo many things developing medically with t1d that my son may either will see a t1d cure or an implantable "artificial pancreas" in his future.
I have no idea how to work this device but I do know I will eventually soon. God give me the patience, knowledge, and determination to make my son live a happy healthy long life. Amen.
