First metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint arthritis, also known as big toe arthritis or hallux rigidus, is a common condition that causes pain and stiffness in the joint at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the cartilage in the joint thins and wears down over time, which can lead to bone spurs and limited motion.

If conservative treatments have failed, surgical treatments including joint fusion and hemi/total joint replacements could be taken into consideration to increase big toe joint range of motion and eliminate joint pain and swelling.
