Cherish Lactation Care

Cherish Lactation Care Cherish Lactation Care is a mother-daughter duo passionate about supporting breastfeeding families in and around Denton County.

If you’re struggling to meet your breastfeeding goals, reach out via our website. We’d be honored to walk along-side you on So, we've all heard that "breast is best", right? But how can new moms be expected to be successful at breastfeeding when most people in our culture have never even seen a baby breastfeed before, let alone know the mechanics of breastfeeding and how to tell if it's being done

correctly? It seems as though new families have so many things stacked against their breastfeeding journeys before the baby even arrives. Cherish Lactation Care is proud to offer professional lactation support to breastfeeding families that is caring, individualized and evidenced-based from pregnancy to weaning. Our hope is that we can help support you in reaching YOUR breastfeeding goals. We offer prenatal breastfeeding classes, which discuss how families can set themselves up to get the best possible start to breastfeeding, what's normal, what's not normal, and everything in between. By the end of the class you will be able to begin your journey as a breastfeeding family with confidence and assurance that you can care for your new baby. We also offer postpartum lactation consults for families who may be experiencing breastfeeding troubles after baby arrives. Whether you're having difficulties with latching and positioning a newborn or your six month old has suddenly started biting at the end of feedings, we can help you. We have a wide array of expertise and most all scenarios are something we have seen many times before. Lastly, but we feel most importantly, we host a Breastfeeding Support Group once a month at the Denton Public Library - North Branch. The group is open to expectant and breastfeeding mothers and older siblings. We enjoy a time discussing breastfeeding and mothering topics and fellowshipping with like-minded mommies. I hope to see YOU at the next meeting so you can start building your proverbial "village". Cherish Lactation Care is so humbled to be able to help women and families in a community as great as Denton. Please let us know how we can best support YOU by contacting us via Facebook or at our website: www.cherishlactation.com

Colostrum. ⁣

It’s the first milk that baby gets. ⁣

Some women start producing it while still pregnant. ⁣

It’s chock-full of immune properties. ⁣

Some call it baby’s first immunization. ⁣

It’s high in protein to help empty the meconium in baby’s gut. ⁣

It coats the lining of the stomach and the intestines to help prevent illness. ⁣

It’s low in volume but is superbly designed to meet all of baby’s nutritional needs. ⁣

It’s thick to help baby learn to swallow and often deep gold in color. ⁣

It’s one of the first gifts a mother can give to her newborn. ⁣

Let’s talk tongue movement. ⁣

There’s so many misconceptions about how a baby’s tongue should move in order to properly breastfeed. ⁣

Look at the baby at the top of this photo. Notice how her tongue extends past the lower gum margin AND makes a wave-like motion (the hump at the back of the tongue). The ni**le is deep inside baby’s mouth (past the hard palate). The tongue is FREE move to move how is should to effectively stimulate and remove milk from the breast. This is an inside picture of a deep latch. ⁣

Signs of a deep latch:⁣
•pain free for mama⁣
•ni**le retains shape - should be as round at the end of the feed as it was as the beginning (no creasing or beveling)⁣
•baby maintains suction (no clicking or smacking noises)⁣
•signs baby is removing milk (actively sucking and swallowing, adequate wet and dirty diapers, baby is happy and content between feeds, and meeting growth and developmental milestones)⁣

Now, compare the bottom picture. Notice how the tongue is BEHIND the lower gum margin and there is no wave present. The ni**le is shallow in baby’s mouth and resting on the hard palate (OUCH!). This is an inside picture of a RESTRICTED tongue TRYING to latch onto the breast. The breast is not effectively stimulated (read: loss or decrease in milk supply) and baby isn’t able to efficiently remove milk (read: hungry, unhappy baby). ⁣

The tongue can be anchored to the floor of the mouth anywhere under the tongue, from the tip all the way to the back of the mouth. Often times, we hear providers tell a struggling mother that her problems are not from her baby’s tongue without ever doing a proper oral evaluation and, “Look! Baby can stick out her tongue fine!” 🤦🏼‍♀️ ⁣

Tongue restrictions are not always the cause for breastfeeding problems, but its something we see often. More providers need to be educated on how to look at the extension AND elevation of the tongue and how those two movements happens in coordination with each other. Our phrase has always been, “It’s less about form and more about FUNCTION.” ⁣

Ok, I’ll get off my soap box. ⁣

Have you ever wanted to be apart of breastfeeding research?

Are you a current breastfeeding mother who has experience nursing in public?

Do you want the chance to have your personal experiences and views on breastfeeding published in a book?

Do you want professionally edited breastfeeding portraits of you and your little one as payment?

If you answered yes to these questions then you may be a good fit to participate in research on the breastfeeding experiences of urban mothers.

A UNT PHD candidate and fellow nursing/working mother reached out to us looking for help recruiting the perfect subjects for her research. We’ve known this sweet mama for many years. She has a true passion for the promotion and normalization of breastfeeding and we are confident she will do big things with her career!

If you want more information then feel free to PM us or email breastfeedingDFWstudy@gmail.com directly.

We're back! We took January off of social media and it. was. wonderful. We spent our extra minutes loving on those closest to us, including great-grandma MacKenzie during her final days. We were reminded that no one is guaranteed their next breath, and relationships are what matter most in this life. Pouring into them should take priority over everything else. So, that's our "resolution" of sorts, not just for 2019, but for the rest of our days, to pour into people and to show them the love God shows us when we least deserve it.

So, we're excited (just like baby Vera in the picture!) to continue pouring into our community and clients at our monthly breastfeeding support group tomorrow. Come share with us what your "resolutions" from January have morphed into in February - and, as always, tell us what's going on in your breastfeeding relationships. It's always a good time!

Until tomorrow!

It’s looks like North Texas has a good chance of seeing our first wintery weather of the season tomorrow!! Due to potential inclement weather, we WILL NOT be meeting for support group tomorrow, January 2nd. Stay home with your babies and drink warm coco, play card games with loved ones and watch your little ones from the warm side of the window as they catch snowflakes on their tongue. ❄️ ⛄️ 💙
