Did you know that May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month?

Celiac disease is a condition where a person develops inflammation, swelling or damage to their intestine when they eat gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. 🌾

This condition is more common than you may realize – as many as 3️⃣ million people in the U.S. (about 1% of the population) may have celiac disease, which includes both children and adults. Today, around 70% of people with celiac disease are non-Hispanic White, but people from different parts of the world such as Mexico, Latin America, India and China also have the condition.

For people with celiac disease, even a small amount of gluten can be harmful. It’s key to consult a doctor and understand the cause of symptoms to receive the proper diagnosis and treatment plan, which might include the gluten-free diet.

TSGE Member Spotlight: Gaurav Arora, MD, MS, AGAF, is one of the newest members to join TSGE's Board. Dr. Arora practices in Denton, where he runs his own practice, Texas Digestive Care. Dr. Arora Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist is also the Chief of Gastroenterology at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton.

Dr. Arora previously founded Denton Digestive Care and was an Assistant Professor and faculty gastroenterologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he continues to serve as a volunteer faculty.
