A mom will tell me, “He’ll nurse great on the left, but he absolutely loses it on the right.”
I start wondering what birth looked like and whether there might be a reason baby is more comfortable turning one way than the other.
Was labor long? Fast? Was baby sunny side up? Did they spend hours stuck in one position? Was there a C-section, vacuum, forceps, or just a really hard journey into the world?
Birth is a lot for a tiny body.
Sometimes babies come out carrying some tension, and one of the first places mom notices it is during feeding. One side feels easy. The other side feels awkward. Baby arches, pulls away, fusses, or just refuses.
When babies are more comfortable turning one direction than the other, it can affect how easily they latch or feed on a particular side.
That’s one reason many families seek out gentle chiropractic care. We look for areas of tension or restricted movement that may be making it harder for baby to comfortably turn, latch, and feed. But we’re also looking at the nervous system. Feeding is a brain-based activity, and babies need to be able to coordinate turning, latching, sucking, swallowing, and breathing—all at the same time. When the brain and body communicate well, feeding is often easier and less stressful for both baby and mom.
Because baby’s jobs are pretty simple: eat, sleep, and p**p. When one of those isn’t going smoothly, it’s worth looking into.
