In the study "How Do You Learn to Walk? Thousands of Steps and Dozens of Falls Per Day" by Adolph, Karen E, et al., it’s noted that when children are learning to walk, they typically fall about 17 times per hour. This shows that falling and getting back up is a natural part of the learning process—it's how we all master walking!

Sensory Processing and Regulation

Did you know that our brains receive and interpret information from the world around us through our senses? This process is called sensory processing. It's how we take in sights, sounds, textures, smells, and more to make sense of our environment.

Sensory regulation is the ability to manage and respond to these sensory experiences in a way that helps us feel calm and focused. It’s about finding the balance between seeking stimulation and avoiding overload.

For more information regarding your child's ability to regulate and processing sensory input, please reach out to your occupational therapist.

Does your child push too hard on their pencil/paper when writing? Does your child chew or bite on something to help them focus or are they constantly moving while they are at their desk? All of these could be associated with decrease proprioception awareness or the body’s ability to understand where it is at in space. Check out these five simple activities to bring more awareness to your child’s bodies prior to engaging in a sitting task. Ask your therapist for more information regarding these activities.
