There is mounting evidence for the role of metabolism in mental disorders like depression and suicidal ideation. How is your metabolic health?

A new study links treatment-resistant depression and suicidal ideation to metabolic dysfunction—not just a chemical imbalance, but a deeper issue rooted in mitochondrial impairment. Could targeting metabolism be the key to revolutionizing psychiatric care and offering new hope where traditional tr...

Yet another paper with evidence for the power of ketones to improve brain function. Are you ready to improve your mood and increase your energy by restoring metabolic function?

Ketone bodies, known for their role in energy metabolism during fasting, have been shown to directly interact with damaged proteins in the brain, aiding their clearance through autophagy.

Nutrition is one of the pillars that good health rests upon.
Eat your protein first.
Most people are not aware that there are only two macronutrients that are essential. That’s right, humans require only protein and fat. Recommendations for protein intake are all over the map, so it can be confusing to know how much to eat. Here’s a simple rule of thumb. For an adult, an adequate serving of protein is 30 grams. This is the amount needed to signal protein growth which you need to make new proteins such as enzymes, hormones, bone and neurotransmitters. So, one starting point for protein intake for the average adult is to have 3 meals each containing 30 grams of protein. You could have as much as one gram of protein per pound of body weight, so 90 grams might not be enough, depending upon your ideal body weight.
What do you notice when you increase your protein intake.

From the article, "Participants who adhered to the high-fat, low-carb diet experienced a 30% reduction in psychiatric symptoms and an average 10% reduction in weight." Trust me when I say this does not happen when medications are used. Please share with anyone you know who is experiencing mental illness. Medications do not restore well-being. They only "manage" symptoms and not so well at that quite often.

A pilot study suggests the ketogenic diet may ease symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and reduce weight gain associated with metabolic syndrome.

Do this for at least one week and let me know how it goes.

Ballroom dancing may be more effective than treadmill walking at preventing cognitive impairment and brain atrophy in older adults.

My guess is that dancing adds human contact/relationships, learning the dance moves, music, and more balance training.

"I hope you dance."

The foundation of a good nutrition plan is real, whole food because it is nutrient dense. Hiighly processed foods are not satiating and lead to overeating. Processed foods are also lacking in vital nutrients, such as protein. Adults should aim to have no less than two meals per day with at least 30 grams of protein. How much protein are you getting per day? Have you noticed any positive changes when you focus on your protein intake?

This cohort study examines the consumption of ultraprocessed food and risk of depression among 31 172 US females aged 42 to 62 years.
