Dee & Derek
I had the amazing honor of meeting this sweet family as their doula with their first sweet boy almost two years ago.
So second babies…having a tendency to come at a rather rapid pace…I was ready for that call from them at a moments notice.
Dee’s norm, it seems, is to start labor a week ahead of her estimated due date. So we mutually decided that this baby would be born on July 4th. There was no “maybe” he’ll be born on the fourth, “that’d be fun!”, no we pretty much told this babe that his birthday would be July 4th.
Around 10:00 in the morning, on July 4th…I got the call.
Contractions around 2-3 minutes apart, lasting a minute or more, so I got myself over there. We chatted, we walked, grandma and grandpa came to pick up big brother….contractions slowed to 10-12 minutes apart.
So we came up with a plan. We’ll do a Miles Circuit together, we’ll eat, and we’ll nap this afternoon.
So we spent the next 90 minutes in darkness and listening to the soft sounds of worship in the background.
Contractions picked up midway through the circuit but by the end they were still 10-12 minutes apart. So we collectively decided that food and a nap was in order, so with that I left to get a nap in myself. No more than stepping out of the door did her contractions pick back up to 2-5 minutes apart.
Within the next hour we headed to the hospital.
Upon arrival we were pleasantly surprised to find that babe had made some great progress in the last few hours. 7/100/0.
We breathed, we swayed, we took a nap….
Within the next 4.5 hours the urge to push was undeniable. Within 4 minutes, a 1 minute shoulder dystocia, and major determination her sweet boy had been brought fully earth side into the world.
All 9 lbs 10 oz of him.
It’s so fun to watch these sweet families grow, it’s even more exciting to watch motherhood unfold before me.
So proud of you mama, proud and honored to be with you through it.
