Comprehensive Report Cites MA Hospital Among Worst Charitable “Taker” Hospitals

The widely respected Lown Institute highlighted which ‘non-profit’ hospitals make the most in tax benefits and give the least in charitable care.

MA’s Mass General Brigham hospital system is among the ten worst ‘takers’, taking in more than $461m in tax breaks than it gives in charity care.

Our most vulnerable patients pay the price for this mass abuse of so-called non-profit tax status. Tax break monies are supposed to go to charity care, not fatten hospital profits.

Let’s Work Toward Fairer Healthcare Together

Welcome to CHAIN. We are now taking action in Massachusetts! The fight against unfair medical debt is real. Bay State families - especially those of color - face unfair treatment from mega hospitals while the same hospitals get millions in tax breaks that are supposed to help care for low-income patients.

Join with us to get fairer health care together. Complete our survey below and post your story here on our page. We want to hear from patients and families struggling to pay medical bills and get the assistance from hospitals they deserve.

Welcome Massachusetts! We are thrilled to launch our first Massachusetts public information campaign highlighting the damage caused by medical debt and rising hospital costs. Bay Staters can voice their concerns by taking our medical debt survey here. And check out our page to watch ads now...

Through a government program aimed at helping low-income patients, some hospitals buy medications at reduced prices. They can sell them to patients and their insurers for much more.

The Colorado Legislature is considering a bill that could be the most impactful one introduced in the last several years to help give lower income patients access to affordable medication, and we like it!!

SB-124 requires non-profit hospitals to use the dollars they get through the Federal 340B program to decrease the out-of-pocket costs for low-income patients. That's exactly what that Federal program was suppose to do, and this bill reinforces the intent and ends the fraud that has overtaken it.

Thank you to the two Republican and two Democrat legislators that came together for the good of the consumer. Barbara Kirkmeyer Julie Gonzales . Kyle Brown Garcia Brown

If you know any of the Senators on the Health & Human Services Committee, please urge them to pass this bill out of Committee so that we consumers can more easily join the conversation.
