"Is Your Thyroid Really Fine? What Standard Tests Might Miss"
Kimberly Cunningham, from Cunningham Clinic, explains why standard annual thyroid testing may miss thyroid dysfunction even when a doctor says the thyroid is “fine.” She outlines basic thyroid anatomy and physiology, noting the thyroid mainly produces T4, which must be converted by deiodinase enzymes into T3. She describes how free T3 binds with ferritin (from iron) to enter cells and support metabolism, bowel regularity, hair health, and weight maintenance. She distinguishes hypothyroidism (the gland not producing enough hormone) from low thyroid function or low free T3 syndrome (the system not working), and says a TSH-only test checks gland output but not the whole system. She recommends a complete thyroid panel: TSH, free T3, ferritin (especially for women), and TPO antibodies.
