Just like a birth doula offers support during the birthing process, a death doula helps someone deal with their impending death and any preparations they need to make. In many cases, an end-of-life doula picks up where hospice services end — due to the constraints of insurance, most medical care professionals are restricted in what services they can perform, and how much time they spend with each patient. A doula bridges the gap between medical staff and family caregivers by providing time, support, and help with non-medical tasks. Their ultimate goal is to assist patients and their families in creating a personal, peaceful, and special end-of-life transition.

The way we, as a culture, view and experience death is rapidly changing. For so long death was a medical event which happened behind closed doors in hospitals and long term care facilities. So may people have lost their lives alone and quarantined to a hospital room since 2020; the collective trauma that COVID-19 has caused has sparked efforts to bring death back into a human experience. Death is coming back into local communities as more and more people are opting to keep terminal loved ones at home. A death positive society is becoming more and more attainable as death is spoken about openly. One of our main goals at Dahlia Doulas is to help educate the public in an effort to remove stigmas surrounding the dying process and end-of-life care. Challenging the culture of silence surrounding death has empowered people to reevaluate what makes a good death
