Last week Osprey Behavioral Consulting, in collaboration with professionals from several different agencies around the country, presented our findings at the APBA conference in Seattle, from a two-year long research project aimed at identifying the most common barriers to retention in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. Here's a summary of the study and findings:

*The top three categories of respondents represented were Board Certified Behavior Analyst (67%), Registered Behavior Technician (8.5%), and Other (5.4%)

*Most respondents lived in the coastal United States.

*The total number of different jobs held by respondents averaged to just under 4, with the highest being 15 or more different jobs.

*The top 5 reasons respondents chose to leave their places of employment, in order, were: company culture, life/personal changes, pay/compensation, supervision/support, and staff growth.

*The top 5 reasons respondents chose to stay at their places of employment, in order, were: company culture, pay/compensation, staff growth, supervision/support, and flexibility.

We will be publishing our findings in the coming months. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us for the 17-page report that includes the entirety of the data set. Cheers, and we look forward to seeing you all at future conferences and events!

Who We Are

Osprey Behavioral Consulting was founded in 2022 to offer a more progressive and holistic ABA model rooted in environmental justice, trauma-informed care, value-centered practice, and client agency. We also believe that ABA must be intersectional, embrace neurodiversity, and ensure human rights and dignity for clients and families.

Why an Osprey?

Osprey are birds of prey, but they do not belong to any larger classification of similar birds such as eagles, hawks, or falcons. However, in spite of being so different that they have a category of their own, osprey are incredibly successful hunters that can thrive in many different environments. They even have unique adaptations that most other birds of prey do not have.

In this vein, Osprey Behavioral Consulting believes that different does not mean less capable. We all have adaptations that allow us to explore the world around us in meaningful ways, and those of us who are neurodivergent are no exception. Our goal is to help people discover their unique “adaptations” and develop skillsets to make life as navigable and meaningful as possible.

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Emily Mandel and I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and the founder of Osprey Behavioral Consulting.
I hold a bachelors degree in Psychology and Sculpture, and a masters degree in Behavior Analysis. I obtained my board certification in 2015, and since then I have been active in the behavioral science community as a clinician, administrator, researcher, and university faculty.
Outside the conventional scope of ABA, I am also passionate about the intersection of behavioral psychology and environmental education. This passion has led to a volunteer position at Nature’s Educators, as well as the pursuit of a degree in Environmental Geography.
My goal is to apply my skillsets toward constructing an intersectional ABA model that incorporates a wide variety of voices and perspectives. I’m excited to be part of a larger movement toward a more progressive, inclusive, and neurodiversity-affirming ABA.
