This was one of the hardest weeks of my life. Here’s what I learned as the Daughter of someone going through recovery from open heart surgery.

#1: Listen to your Body & Take Action Right away. your body is always talking to you. Are you listening? So many people push symptoms under the rug until it’s too late and they can’t do anything about it, but the truth is that our body is always talking to us. We have to get good at listening

#2: Take care of your body now. My Dad has always taken care of his body and done sports. He knew that his Dad died young and he wanted to do everything he could to prevent this. His recovery is remarkable because he was so strong going into this.

That’s the thing no one tells you when you’re sitting in a doctor’s office being handed a prescription and told you’ll be on this medication forever and there are no other alternatives.

Most of the time when I ask women to close their eyes and imagine what their life would look like after 4 to 6 months of working together, they say the same thing: “I have no idea. I’ve been sick for so long.”

That breaks my heart. And it is something we desperately need to rewrite together. Because if we can’t imagine it, how can we create it? If we are constantly moving away from what we don’t want instead of toward what we do want, we stay stuck.

Women are scared to even name what they want, because what if they dream it and still don’t get there?

That is the conditioning of perfectionism at work. The belief that health is something else to get right or fail at.

Last month I got on stage and told my full transformation story for the first time.

The 7 years of waking up exhausted no matter how much I slept.

I would run a full thyroid panel.

Not just TSH and free T4. I am talking free T3, total T3, reverse T3, and TPO and TgAB antibodies.

Because you can have a TSH that looks perfectly normal while your immune system is mounting a response and your T4 is converting to RT3 instead of the active form which is free T3. = you gain weight, lose hair, feel tired.

Here is something I hear all the time.

❌“I have already tested my thyroid and everything came back normal.”

🧐But if you have not run a full panel, & had someone look at them from functional and optimal lab ranges, and accounted for all of the pieces below – you have not actually seen the full picture yet.

Then I would look at cortisol and adrenal function.
Most women with Hashimoto’s have a heightened stress response and adrenal and cortisol dysregulation which can slow the thyroid down. (don’t come for me - stress support is a really important part of thyroid health!)

Then I would run a full iron panel including ferritin.
Low + dysregulated iron is one of the most overlooked drivers of hair loss and fatigue in thyroid disease.

Then minerals – including iodine for the right candidate.
Magnesium, zinc, selenium, and iodine are all essential for thyroid hormone production and immune regulation.

💩And I would absolutely run a GI Map.
Because 70 percent of your immune system lives in your gut. H. pylori, dysbiosis, candida, parasites, a compromised gut lining – all of it can keep your thyroid inflamed and your Hashimoto’s out of control.

You’re sleeping… but still waking up exhausted.

You’re eating well, trying to take care of yourself, doing all the “right” things — and yet your body still feels like it’s dragging through the day.

Your brain feels foggy.

One of the biggest things I want women to understand is this:

Your thyroid is not operating in isolation.

It is in constant communication with your stress hormones & nervous system.

Your adrenals and your thyroid are deeply connected. When your body feels overwhelmed, under-fueled, emotionally overloaded, or chronically in fight or flight, your thyroid will respond by slowing down.

That’s not dysfunction. That’s protection.

This is where we see an uptick in Reverse T3 at the expense of T3. RT3 is one of the markers we look at that tells us the body is hitting the brakes.

Recently had a conversation with a client about how to “cure” her stress.

Here’s what I told her:
Do things your 6-year-old self loved to do. Dance in your underwear. Sing your heart out. Find one thing that brings you joy and commit to doing it more. Go for a walk. Get outside and be in the sunshine.

We have overcomplicated nervous system regulation.

2025 was the year of everyone talking about “regulation” while handing people longer and longer lists of everything they must do. Put your face in an ice bath.

No wait, your whole body.
Do this exact breathwork 17 times.

Track this metric.

We turned “fixing stress” into another thing we have to perfect.

I call bu****it.

First of all, we need to stop telling ourselves there is something to fix. There isn’t. Life is going to life. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not broken.

And second, regulation doesn’t have to be another item on your to-do list. It gets to be woven into your daily life. It gets to be anything that helps you feel more safety in your body. It doesn’t have to look a certain way.

Doing a million tools because someone on the internet told you to doesn’t equate to regulation.
It only works if it actually works for you.

So here’s what I want you to do. Take that fancy 17-step “I have to fix my stress” list and throw it out. Do less. Do what brings you joy. That’s it.

From Hormonal Chaos to Hormonal Bliss - Why I Started SHE Talks Health

Sophie Shepherd is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner,FDN-P, who just 7 years ago was desperately struggling to figure out why she felt so awful.
