One of the biggest things I want women to understand is this:

Your thyroid is not operating in isolation.

It is in constant communication with your stress hormones & nervous system.

Your adrenals and your thyroid are deeply connected. When your body feels overwhelmed, under-fueled, emotionally overloaded, or chronically in fight or flight, your thyroid will respond by slowing down.

That’s not dysfunction. That’s protection.

This is where we see an uptick in Reverse T3 at the expense of T3. RT3 is one of the markers we look at that tells us the body is hitting the brakes.

And when it’s elevated, it usually means the body is under stress. That stress can be physical, like under-eating, poor sleep, mineral depletion, inflammation, or toxins.

And it can also be emotional stress that has been building for years.

This is why so many women are told their labs are normal but still feel exhausted, foggy, anxious, cold, inflamed, or stuck in their bodies.

Recently had a conversation with a client about how to “cure” her stress.

Here’s what I told her:
Do things your 6-year-old self loved to do. Dance in your underwear. Sing your heart out. Find one thing that brings you joy and commit to doing it more. Go for a walk. Get outside and be in the sunshine.

We have overcomplicated nervous system regulation.

2025 was the year of everyone talking about “regulation” while handing people longer and longer lists of everything they must do. Put your face in an ice bath.

No wait, your whole body.
Do this exact breathwork 17 times.
Download this app.
Track this metric.

We turned “fixing stress” into another thing we have to perfect.

I call bu****it.

First of all, we need to stop telling ourselves there is something to fix. There isn’t. Life is going to life. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not broken.

And second, regulation doesn’t have to be another item on your to-do list. It gets to be woven into your daily life. It gets to be anything that helps you feel more safety in your body. It doesn’t have to look a certain way.

Doing a million tools because someone on the internet told you to doesn’t equate to regulation.
It only works if it actually works for you.

So here’s what I want you to do. Take that fancy 17-step “I have to fix my stress” list and throw it out. Do less. Do what brings you joy. That’s it.

The real foundations of health are simpler than we’ve been told. Lean into joy. Get sunshine. Find connection. Eat whole foods. Move your body. Refill your nutrient stores.

And then, if there’s evidence of deeper stressors like toxins or pathogens, we address those too. In that order.

Okay, maybe 4 on a really demanding week. But that’s it.

And trust me, I used to have a supplement graveyard that would make you weep.

Bottles on bottles of things I thought I needed because someone on Instagram said so, or because a practitioner threw them at my symptoms without actually understanding what my body was asking for.

Here’s what changed: I stopped guessing and started testing.

My current non-negotiables are based on MY mineral patterns, MY genetic pathways, MY exposure history.

Connie had done HTMA before.

She got a list of supplements. No explanation. No context. No understanding of what was actually happening in her body.

So when she came to me, she was skeptical. But also desperate.

Her symptoms were all over the place - PMS, bloating, gallbladder pain, poor circulation, muscle weakness, hypothyroid. It felt random. Disconnected.

But when I looked at her HTMA, I saw the patterns immediately.

High copper driving estrogen excess, which explained her PMS, thyroid issues, and gallbladder pain.

Depleted sodium and potassium tanking her stomach acid production, which explained the bloating and digestive chaos.

Low potassium and magnesium causing her circulation issues, muscle weakness, and constipation.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. But let’s be honest - most thyroid awareness stops at TSH levels and medication adjustments.

You’re told “your labs are normal - just take levothyroxine (forever).”

And that’s it. That’s the plan.

So you start feeling like you’ve tried everything and that there’s no solution. That you’re just stuck like this - with the hair loss, the uncontrollable weight gain, the crippling exhaustion.

I get it because I was you. This was my reality at 22.

But here’s what nobody tells you: your thyroid is trying to right itself. It’s trying so hard to get your metabolism back in order - it just needs to be given the right cues.

Your thyroid doesn’t work in isolation. It’s influenced by minerals, blood sugar, gut health, nervous system regulation, toxins, and hormones. When any of those systems are struggling, your thyroid can’t do its job - even if your labs look “normal.”

Stop guessing at your thyroid.
You’re the girl who does everything right.
You track your macros.
You never miss a workout.
You’ve been gluten-free for years.
You take your thyroid meds every single morning at the same time.
You’ve spent hundreds on supplements the internet swore would work.
And you’re still exhausted by 2pm.

I used to wake up with my heart racing.

Before my feet even hit the floor, the anxiety was already there - that buzzing, wired feeling in my chest that made it hard to take a deep breath.

I’d hit walls of exhaustion by 3pm.

I couldn’t sleep at night even though I was exhausted.

My body felt like it was stuck in survival mode 24/7.

I tried meditation.

Deep breathing.

All the nervous system tools.

And nothing stuck.

Here’s what I finally learned:

My adrenal glands were tanked.

Completely depleted.

Your adrenal glands are the glands that produce cortisol and help you respond to stress.

They’re what keep your blood sugar stable, your energy steady, and your nervous system regulated.

But they need four specific nutrients to function: sodium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C.

From Hormonal Chaos to Hormonal Bliss - Why I Started SHE Talks Health

Sophie Shepherd is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner,FDN-P, who just 7 years ago was desperately struggling to figure out why she felt so awful.
