Sucking in your stomach or engaging your core all the time can lead to increased pressure and overactivity of the pelvic floor. This can cause leaking, pain, or both. Learning to relax your belly can have a big impact on your pelvic health, but many of us hold tension in our cores, especially with current events being as stressful as they are. If you have trouble relaxing your core, pelvic floor physical therapy can help.

This one is personal for me. After spending most of my twenties in a cycle of injuries, surgeries, recoveries, and reinjuries, my life had become about avoiding pain and avoiding circumstances that might lead to it. So I stopped running, stopped skiing, and lived in fear. Became a PT to learn how to better prevent injury. Learned about the realities (and shortcomings) of rehab.

Then one day (thanks to ) I decided, essentially on a whim, to try lifting a bar. Long story short and many lifts later, I’ve resumed running, skiing, and backpacking again - all things I’d written off in the name of “injury prevention”. I started teaching more of my patients to pick up heavy things, and saw how transformational it could be, especially for folks who have been marginalized, taught to fear their own bodies, and discouraged from challenging themselves in the name of self-protection.

The jury is in on this one folks; learning how to pick up heavy things can have positive impact on just about every single aspect of your life. If you’re curious about how getting stronger can make just about everything better (and if you’ve made it this far!) my lines are always open.

A lot of exercise programs and “bounce back” culture talk about “should and shouldn’t dos” for exercise for diastasis (muscle separation in the core, usually with or after pregnancy but can be caused by many different things). The reality is that there’s no one do or don’t. Most exercises are probably okay! But if you’re concerned or experiencing pain it can be helpful to be evaluated by a rehab professional like a pelvic floor physical therapist to figure out what exercises are best for you.

The muscles of the pelvic floor are very much attuned to our nervous system’s fight or flight response. Dysfunction can happen when the nervous system’s detectors are tuned up too high (imagine a smoke detector that’s too sensitive, always setting off an alarm signal). Pelvic floor PT can help you learn to listen to the nervous system’s warning signs and how to react accordingly.

Pelvic PT at home can keep your nervous system quiet in a lot of ways; one example is that you can pick music you like to listen to (studies have shown that music can induce a calming sensation in the nervous system). You can feel comfortable in your own environment rather than a busy clinic. Reach out today if you’re wondering whether it’s the right time to improve your pelvic health; my inbox is always open.

Pelvic floor PT can be your opportunity to ask questions and learn about a vital part of your body that definitely didn’t get covered in your high school health class 😉. If you’re hoping to learn more about how your body works, from intimacy to bathroom breaks, look for a PT who is comfortable with educating on it!
