Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to everyone… current families and students of mine, former families and students…. And everyone!
I have one baby due the 1st… so we’ll see when they come! Such a blessed year… even with 2 hospital stays and host of other medical drama…. I met the most amazing families, got to work as a night nanny, had 15 births, taught 72 students HypnoBirthing®, held roughly 400 CPR classes, and got a new office. I could not be more thrilled at my decision to continue working for myself and working hard to run a business. I look forward to the year ahead… all the people I will meet and all of course the babies!! I hope you can join me this next year.
Much Love!
-Amanda

Walk into a room while I am supporting a birth and you might think that I am just sitting there doing nothing. I won’t be talking. I won’t be touching the client. I won’t be using anything in my bag.

So what am I doing exactly?

🪑 Watching mom’s breathing and sometimes breathing loudly alongside her to remind her to slow down her breath

🪑 Scanning mom’s body during the contraction to make sure that she isn’t holding any tension

🪑 Monitoring the temperature and lighting to create the peaceful environment that she desires

🪑 Calculating how long it has been since she emptied her bladder

🪑 Thinking about how long she has been in her current position and thinking about the next position that she might try

🪑 Timing contractions to see if they are longer, stronger and closer together

🪑 Thinking about when mom and her partner last had a snack

🪑 Reviewing her preferences to make sure that everything is going according to her plan

🪑 Giving the couple space to connect on an intimate level (allowing for oxytocin) and/or guiding the partner to be the lead support

🪑 Updating notes and capturing labor flow

Sometimes just being fully present is enough. Sometimes just knowing I am there in close proximity is all mom needs to be able to relax and focus on what she needs to do. Sometimes just holding space for them in an unbiased manner allows for a noticeable shift in the energy of the room.

And the list goes on….

Thank you everyone for their support and love while I was in the hospital for kidney failure and the recovering that goes with it. I am working hard to catch up to email and work responsibilities, so just hang in there with me. I appreciate it! Love to you all!

I needed this as part of my healing. The joy that a 9 week old baby brings…. The coo’s (he started “talking” this week and smiling, intentionally, lol), the smell of a fresh baby, the scrunching of his face, his soft hair, the skin to skin (his head on my upper chest) and the pure peace it all brings. I do a night doula work for this family 1 night a week to give the parents one night of uninterrupted sleep…. So it’s just me, the baby, and the still of the night. I love my one night a with him (and his mom and dad are amazing, so that makes it all the more fun!) going back to work has been hard… but this is the best way to ease back in. So watching and snuggling with the most amazing baby. It brings back memories of my babies being this fresh!

I love my job. I honestly thought being a night doula would be the hardest job for me. But I actually love it! I actually stay awake and while not taking care of baby I do work (and watch TV). We try to get little man in his crib to sleep but he tricked me into thinking he was hungry and fell back asleep in my arms…. That was 1 hour ago. But I’ll take it. There is something so innocent about these weeks-old baby… so pure and well intentioned. He is dreaming in my arms and I get to watch him go through all different types of feelings and of course the smiles. I like the quiet of the night. My goal is do what needs to keep little man quiet so mom and dad can sleep. Yes I’m tired during the day, but I nap and eventually catch up on sleep. It’s just me, the baby and the night!

Editing photos from Friday’s Babysitting Class. They were spread out learning to swaddle, feed, change diapers, CPR, choking, and so much more fun. I cannot wait to teach our next one soon. (Posted with written and signed permission from parents)

Spent the night with this cutie! Did some postpartum/night doula work. Love this family, love this baby and can’t wait to spend many more weeks to come with them. Let mom and dad get some sleep!
