I have a sister staying in rehab at Kirkhaven in Rochester.
Except for one night, and two afternoons to do laundry, I have stayed with her, in her room, night and day, 24/7, since she first got there on February 5th.
Yesterday they forced me to leave her. My sister was sobbing and I am beyond upset.
I offered to not leave the building until my sister was discharged, and pointed out that, unlike staff, because I stayed there, I was not getting possibly exposed and coming back every day.
My sister is devastatingly affected by perfumes and chemicals in everything, perfumes, lotions, cleaning products.
I had willingly taken over all aide work for her because it is hard to find safe staff not wearing scented products.
I am self employed and live in Denver. I have been with her since last October, not without sacrifice.
I knew that for my sister to have a real chance to recover, she would need extra support.
So I have been there, night and day, attending to her personal hygiene, bringing all her trays, emptying trash, changing linens, cleaning, mopping the floor, everything.
I asked them to not lump me in the category of a visitor, to consider the situation.
This was not handled well, with any real consideration or compassion.
I, of course, at first refused to leave my sister.
The head social worker waved papers at me and said it is the Govenor not her, and demanded that I leave the premises immediately, or the police would be called to have me removed.
Meanwhile my sister is sobbing
and gutted.
She is close to discharge, but now I am concerned how much this will set her back.
I am trying to figure out who I could contact to be allowed to return to support and care for her.
This situation is stupid, ridiculous, and heatbreaking all at the same time.
