1) Your pump is not one-size-fits-all. The fl**ges come in different sizes. Most pumps come with 24mm fl**ges, and most moms measure about 17-18mm. You wouldn't wear a bra that is too big - don't use a pump that is too big!

2) Wearable pumps are so cool! But they are not meant to be your every day, go-to, milk makers. For someone who is pumping a lot, it's best to have a portable electric pump. Hospital grade pumps? Hmmm... maybe, but usually not necessary.

3) Pumps can cause trauma to the breast. The tissue doesn't like being pulled and sucked by a vacuum! Breastfeeding culture in our community is all "pump pump pump" but breasts were not meant to be emptied by a machine with the power on HIGH.

4) When people talk about a HaaKaa, they are usually talking about the suction pump that can be worn on the breast to help pump the letdown when baby feeds from the other side. Just remember: the HaaKaa pump is also a pump (see #3).

Because breast implants do not disrupt the milk-producing tissue, implants should not affect your ability to breastfeed.

By contrast, reductions that remove the milk-producing tissue might cause a low supply.

BUT, it's important for your lactation medicine physician to know why you got implants in the first place. If you had very little breasts (hypoplastic, tubular, widely spaced) after puberty, you might not have enough milk-producing tissue to develop a full supply.

❌how long to feed

❌if baby is hungry

Apps are not necessary for breastfeeding, and Dr. Stephanie finds that most families find them confusing. Some families find them down right detrimental! Please watch your baby, not the clock!

In 2022, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine revised its recommendations for the treatment of clogged ducts and mastitis.

Heat, pump and deep massage are OUT.

Ice, Ibuprofen and avoiding over-pumping are IN.

Think of it like an ankle sprain! The tissue damage is related to inflammation, not a goopy infected clump of milk! If you are experiencing a lot of clogged ducts and/or mastitis, please see help from Woven Pediatrics.

People who have never been pregnant can make human milk.

This is a process (6 months is best!) that requires a lot of discussion, definitely some hormones, a good breast pump and a lot of love. If you are expecting a newborn through adoption, and you live in Colorado, please contact Woven Pediatrics to discuss your lactation options.

Donor milk is an amazing option for breastfeeding dyads in the first few days of life.

Milk Banks like Mothers' Milk Bank accept milk from moms who have extra. Hyperlactation (over-supply of milk) is a breastfeeding blessing and curse. Thanks to the many lactaters that collect their milk to donate to babies in need!

If you think you need donor milk, please schedule an appointment at Woven Pediatrics!

Very false. The most experienced lactation medicine physicians schedule their breastfeeding evaluations for 60 minutes, and many (like at Woven Pediatrics) schedule for 90 minutes. Also, most pediatricians have fewer than 10 hours of training in lactation.

Schedule a lactation evaluation with a pediatrician who is also an IBCLC who also has time to care for you and your little one!!!

So many moms are told to triple feed. Triple feeding involves 3 steps:

1) Nurse.
2) Pump.
3) Bottle feed.

Dr. Stephanie finds that many families are exhausted after 24 hours of triple feeding, so it's important that the goals are clear. Is the latch the main problem? Is the supply the main problem? Is baby's weight gain the main problem? If you were told to triple feed, you need a lactation consult.

Just like you're planning for your baby's birth, you should plan for your lactation journey. You need to know how your medical history might affect your ability to breastfeed.

Planned C-section, PCOS, infertility, breast implants, reduction surgery, IVF, medications, supplements, ADHD, prenatal depression, anxiety - there are a lot of things to discuss.

The most common first question in my office is:

"Should I take my shoes off?"

Yep, Woven Pediatrics feels like home. It's the perfect place to learn breastfeeding: comfy with expert advice sitting across from you. Dr. Stephanie is a pediatrician and a lactation consultant in Denver/Glendale - someone who knows breastfeeding, babies and mamas. It's important to get help early!

Like so many things in breastfeeding, the relationship between moms with ADHD and their breastfeeding behavior has not been well studied. Dr. Stephanie found a May 2022 from Israel (PMID 35564903, by Adi Freund-Azaria et al) that showed moms with ADHD characteristics were less like to exclusively breastfeed compared to moms without ADHD.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastmilk is the optimal nutrition from birth to 6 months (with complimentary foods added around that time).

But some researchers, like Dr. Emily Oster, argue that the benefits of breastfeeding are overstated. Dr. Stephanie has never liked "breast is best." She believes in guaranteeing that breastfeeding is an option - FOR EVERYMOM.

In Dr. Stephanie's clinical experience, most moms want to try breastfeeding. And they deserve the support, coaching, education, resources, help, space, and time to do so. If you feel compelled to breastfeed - let's do this!

Dr. Stephanie knows that there are a lot of reasons that some people avoid dairy milk. (Let's not get into it over Big Dairy...)

But if it's an option for you, what a great choice! Athletes can benefit because milk (skim or low fat) is an excellent way to hydrate (water, electrolytes AND protein). Pediatricians love milk for big kids because it helps them grow strong bones. And the fat in whole milk is important for toddlers over age 1 - the fat is a substrate for brain growth.

Pumpers: please be sure you are using the right size fl**ge!

Most moms' ni***es are measuring WAY SMALLER than the size that came with the pump (24mm). You can buy fl**ge inserts to put in the 24mm and size down.

Woven Pediatrics sells 13-18mm!

Dr. Stephanie’s own pediatrician, Dr. Thomas Peebles, isolated the measles virus in 1954 - a direct contribution to the vaccine.

The vaccine is grown in chick embryo cells, not human cells.

We are so lucky that measles is not a mutating virus - the same strain of the virus isolated in the 1950s is the one that circulates today.

The concern with measles is: “immune amnesia” as the virus can delete the immune system’s memory - that makes a patient vulnerable to numerous other infections.

The CDC recommends vaccination at 12 months and 4-5 years.

The vaccine is safe for infants as well, but they’ll have to get another 2 doses on the above schedule.

Many pediatricians lack breastfeeding education and don't know how to diagnose or treat an over-supply. Oversupply of breastmilk affects mom (discomfort, frequent mastitis, leaking) and baby (rapid weight gain, discomfort, crazy p**p). Please get help from an IBCLC. Or a pediatrician who is also an IBCLC. 😎

Brrrr! It's cold outside. Immediately after birth, we put babies in a hat and worry about hypothermia. BUT, once babies get home, we actually worry about them being too hot! This is confusing for most new parents.

There is no need to crank the heat, and babies should not sleep with a hat. (According to Evidence Base for 2022 Updated Recommendations for a Safe Infant Sleeping Environment to Reduce the Risk of Sleep-Related Infant Deaths.)

If you're pregnant, a 3 month maternity leave sounds like an amazing opportunity to get some stuff done around the house. But, if you're like most moms, 3 days turns into 6 weeks then *p**f* maternity leave is over. Dr. Stephanie has had many parents say that they fell short of their parental leave goals. So, let's just skip the goals and plan nothing besides rest, bonding, feeding, more rest, more bonding, and more feeding.

Woven Pediatrics encourages any pregnant family to talk to an experienced post-partum provider about their expectations for the 4th trimester.

All group babies can get a weight check, but full consults require an individual appointment.

Please RSVP (see link). Bring a friend, just not a friend with a fever or lots of boogies!
