What an incredible way to spend a Saturday!

This past weekend, the Step Denver community came together for Step Giving – an event where residents, staff, alumni, and corporate partners all hit the sidewalks of the Ballpark Neighborhood to pick up trash and show gratitude.

For many men, these sidewalks hold memories of addiction and survival. One resident even showed us the very spot that he would use to take shelter from the elements.

Coming back in sobriety to clean up those same streets was a powerful full-circle moment.

Happy Halloween! To celebrate this spooky holiday, the guys went mini-golfing and had a newcomers meet-and-greet pizza party. These events were set up by Step's Resident Activities Committee, a resident-led group that plans out events for our men to attend.

These RAC events create an environment for the guys to have fun while building community - a key pillar of Step's program.

Cakes, coins, and lots to celebrate! Yesterday’s meeting was full of hope and gratitude as men marked 2, 3, and 4 years of sobriety—including our very own Weekday Facility Coordinator, Jaime, who’s now 4 years strong! A big thanks to everyone who continues to put in the hard work to strengthen this recovery community.

Yesterday Step Denver hosted its annual Donor Open House, opening our doors to the people who make this mission possible. Donors saw our facility first-hand and heard stories from the men about the life-changing work happening here on a daily basis.

"I've been through a lot of things in my life - I thought I handled it with drinking. But all I did was push it aside. "

A big thanks to David, who recently opened up about his recovery and how Step helped him turn things around:

"I have an older sister that finally intervened. She asked me if I was ready to turn around and see if I could live the second half of my life sober. I was on the verge of losing the house, I had already lost my wife, and I had three grandkids I didn't want to lose because of my drinking. I thought that I wasn't hurting anybody, but I was really hurting my family the most.

"Finally, I said yes.

"When I walked through the doors of Step, I told her I’ll see you in 45 days - I thought this was a quick fix program. And here I am 17 months later, living in a sober home.

"And I'm very proud of who I am today. I'm a union electrician – I just got a promotion and a raise. And I went from just showing up three, four times a week for the past 15 years to being there every day with a crew of 12 people that count on me.

"Step - it's an apt name, because it gives you the steps and the processes to go through it. I've been through enough big storms that now all the storms are just like raindrops. And I have the umbrella to handle it."

Every man who enters the program receives a resident handbook to guide them through each phase of the program. Right now, there are five handbooks sitting on the admissions desk – meaning that five men decided to change their lives today.

We recently got to sit down with Donovan and discuss how he turned his life from chaos to a life of purpose – passing down what he has learned to those coming from similar situations:

“My life was chaotic - I was surrounded by drug dealers, alcoholics, and gang members my whole life. Eventually, I started falling into that chaos. After a long time in active addiction, I ended up sleeping on an air mattress at my grandparents' house with nothing but some clothes, a broken TV, and a car that was about to be repossessed. Not even a month after I moved in, it just clicked: I gotta fix my sh*t.

“One of the RSMs told me about this place in a meeting. I didn’t want to be here at first. But it was a little bit after my mom passed – 56 days into my recovery – that I was just like ‘I have to do this. If I decided to use because of that, I'm going to die.’ This place really helped me out a lot. All the RSMs were checking on me, everybody that I made friends with here was checking on me, making sure I was all right.

“Right now I work with a company that helps people build credit and buy houses. I left the path of chaos behind me and now I'm trying to better myself by guiding people to be better. That’s all I consider myself to be to the guys - a guide. I'm not better than the next person. Coming from a life full of chaos and going to this life of serenity is just insane. And I love it."
