IBT General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman's arrival in Fort Morgan on Wednesday sends a clear message to Cargill that its lockout of more than 1,700 is bigger than Fort Morgan, bigger than Cargill: It's a fight to protect the dignity and rights of the men and women who keep our food chain moving. Zuckerman is in Fort Morgan today reaching out to locked out members to hear their stories, their needs and to remind them they have the weight of the IBT behind them in their fight for a fair contract.

More than 1,700 Cargill Teamsters, locked out by their employer in Fort Morgan, are fighting for their futures on the picket line as the lockout enters its second week. Many are walking the line with the people who matter most -- their children. "This is why we go to work -- our families," said Dean Modecker, Teamsters Local 455 Secretary-Treasurer. "We can't lay them off when times are hard. We can't stop sending them to the doctor because Cargill doesn't want to pay us the hours. It's time for Cargill to understand that these men and women are driven by something greater than a paycheck. They're fighting for their kids."

Cargill Teamsters in Fort Morgan kicked off the Memorial Day weekend on the streets of the town where they live, work, and care for their families to show the community the impact of Cargill’s lockout of more than 1,700 hard-working men and women. Said Teamsters Local 455 Secretary-Treasurer Dean Modecker: “These members are not backing down after Cargill’s assault on their livelihoods — not today, not tomorrow, not until they have a fair contract with their employer. We’ll be here until these members return to their jobs where they belong.”

More than 1,700 Cargill Teamsters have been locked of their jobs in Fort Morgan, placing them and their families in financial peril. To ensure these men and women are fed, Teamsters Local 455 has established a Cargill Support fund. Cargill chose to lock out the very workers who keep its profits running.

UFCW Local 7 stands in solidarity with our siblings who are being denied the opportunity to work while fighting for the fair contract, dignity, and respect they deserve. Meatpacking workers do some of the hardest and most essential work in this country, and instead of bargaining fairly, Cargill responded with a lockout.

This is corporate greed, plain and simple.

We call on Cargill to end the lockout immediately, return to the bargaining table, and negotiate in good faith. Workers built this industry and workers will stand together against intimidation and union busting every single time.

Locked-out Cargill Teamster thronged the Fort Morgan meat processing facility with picket signs and packed the city streets Thursday as the company's lockout of more than 1,700 Teamsters Local 455 members entered its second full day. Music and laughter and the sound of multiple languages filled the air, reflecting the wide range of cultures that make up the workforce, with Spanish, Haitian, Somali and English dialects. "We represent members of every skin tone, spoken language, ethnic and religious background, and it is inspiring to watch these men and women join together to demand a fair contract from this employer," said Teamsters Local 455 Secretary-Treasurer Dean Modecker.
