A pediatrician recently started a series of posts that review vaccine-preventable illnesses; most currently practicing physicians in the US have not seen these diseases in real life, but they are sadly becoming more common as public health resources are strained and vaccine misinformation spreads.

Third in this series is Pertussis aka whooping cough. Be sure you listen to the recording of what whooping cough sounds like in a baby, but be aware that older kids and adults with whooping cough often won't have this type of cough.

Note - Dr. Krugman states that there is no current recommendation for repeated TdaP vaccines in adults but the CDC does recommend a booster tetanus shot at least every 10 years, and I have always felt that if we are boostering the tetanus, we might as well booster the whooping cough as well.

This first post is especially timely given the current measles outbreak in Texas, with additional cases now in New Mexico as well.

Free COVID Tests Available Soon!

The Biden Administration has announced that free COVID-19 tests will once again be available starting in late September. Once available, you will be able to order your free tests by visiting www.covidtests.gov.

According to the Dept. of Health & Human Services website, “The COVID-19 Tests will detect current COVID-19 variants and can be used through the end of the year.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Each household can receive four tests.

📈 With holiday gatherings right around the corner and COVID cases on the rise, it’s always a good idea to have tests on hand.

⚠️ If you test negative and are experiencing symptoms, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a second test performed 48 hours after the first. It recommends three tests for people who have been exposed but don't have symptoms, also 48 hours apart. More information here: https://tinyurl.com/2p9j5j9a

👍🏼 On the flipside if you get a positive test, you can be highly confident that you have COVID-19 (false positives are rare).

📢 Please share this post to spread the word to your friends, families, and communities.

✅ If you have tests at home, check here to find the extended expiration dates before discarding them. https://tinyurl.com/mtcecj9h

Stay safe. Stay well. Stay prepared. Stay Nerdy!
