"HOW EMOTIONS ARE MADE, Lisa Feldman Barrett, "whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions."
Her work (and that of many others) "overturns the widely held belief that emotions live in distinct parts of the brain (the 'triune brain' model) and are universally expressed and recognized. Instead, she has shown that emotion is constructed in the moment, by core systems that interact across the whole brain, aided by a lifetime of learning."
*key term: A LIFETIME OF LEARNING. What this means is that we can learn to shift the 'predictions' the brain makes through new experiences and numerous practices (yoga, mindfulness training, Neurofeedback, E.M.D.R., drama/dance/music/art therapy, narrative practices, somatic practices, to name but a few) - ancient wisdom in many cultures - in order to increase our 'emotional granularity'... literally to change the brain's 'predictions' based on new adaptive information (the basis of Francine Shapiro's model for E.M.D.R. so many years ago).

REPOSTING this excellent book, highly recommended especially if you are still using the 'TRIUNE BRAIN' model to talk about the human brain.
