I think it is interesting that Renaissance doctors prescribed herbs that resemble the human body because many of the old Chinese medicine herbalists did the same thing. Surprisingly enough many of these herbs actually do benefit the things that they resemble. One example is that back in the day some wise herbalist noticed that the "meat" of walnut looks like a brain, and now there is a lot of research proving that they are one of the top foods for brain health.

The Renaissance may have been a time of great scientific and artistic innovation, but the era’s medical treatments still had a ways to go before they became safe and effective. Here are a few questionable cures a Renaissance doctor may have prescribed you.

I guess you know that you might be addicted to your phone if you lose that ability to move your fingers. Also if you take a week off of work to spend a week straight on your phone only to take breaks for sleep, you might want to find a different job.

A woman apparently lost the ability to move her fingers after using her smartphone constantly for a week.

Did you know that trained individuals can sniff out Parkinson's? Researchers have found that the scent of a person's sebum, not sweat, can help determine whether or not a person has Parkinson's. At the beginning of our Chinese medicine training, we are taught that a patient's sweat can be used for diagnosis. This is a skill that not very few practitioners that I know use, and I personally don't use it myself, but it is interesting that scent diagnosis is "a thing" that is now backed by science.

A retiree with super-smelling skills has helped researchers identify compounds unique to Parkinson's suffers -- and it could lead to an earlier diagnosis.

In this age of constantly being "connected", we are always a click away from something to p**s us off or something that is supposed to scare us. I think disconnecting from our devices and spending time in the analog/natural world is medicine in itself in the digital era.

In this randomized study, researchers found that human breast milk was just as effective as hydrocortizone 1% ointment at treating infant eczema. So if you are searching for a natural solution to treat your child's eczema, I would say why not try it out?

Before I went to acupuncture school I kind of thought acupuncture was BS, and it was just the placebo effect making everyone feel better. But nowadays there is more and more research coming out regularly on its benefits, and hospitals across the country are starting to incorporate acupuncture as an alternative to opiates and other narcotics. In a pilot study at this hospital, researchers found that patients who received acupuncture decreased their pain levels by 50%, anxiety and stress levels went down over 60+%, and nausea levels were reduced by 66%.

In the emergency department, acupuncture relieves pain, cuts stress and anxiety, and is acceptable to the majority of patients.

For those that know someone with hyperactive behavior, you could suggest that they ditch foods and drinks with artificial food coloring and additives. Research is showing that artificial food colorings or sodium benzoate in the diets of young children can cause increased hyperactivity.

Artificial colours or a sodium benzoate preservative (or both) in the diet result in increased hyperactivity in 3-year-old and 8/9-year-old children in the general population.

Many people wait to get the motivation to get something done, but most of the time that motivation never arrives. I know personally that finding the motivation to work out or do something healthy is only a temporary thing. Having the discipline to do the things you know are good for you is hard at first, but in the long term, it makes these tasks and habits sustainable because it gets easier over time.
