"Diabetes is a huge health crisis in the US and around the world. With 30 million people with diabetes in the US and 100 million with prediabetes, 1 out of every 3 Americans has a glucose problem. In a quick, information filled hour Dr. Morstein will touch upon various aspects of diabetes, statistics, different types, etiologies, medications, supplements, and technology.

Dr. Mona Morstein has been a naturopathic physician for thirty-five years. She was Chair of Nutrition, Gastroenterology professor and Clinical Supervisor at a naturopathic medical school for eleven years. She has her own clinic, Arizona Integrative Medical Solutions, in Mesa, Arizona, in the multidisciplinary clinic of Nevy Health.

Dr. Morstein is recognized as an expert on diabetes. Her 560 page book “Master Your Diabetes: A Comprehensive, Integrative Approach to Both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes,” is an acclaimed, in-depth, evidenced based, educational book for both patients and physicians. She sees patients for all other hormonal conditions: thyroid, adrenal, me**es, menopause, and male concerns.

In 2012, Dr. Morstein received the “President’s Award” from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians."

Next up is Dr. Steven Milkis: For nearly two decades, Dr. Milkis has brought his distinct patient-centric approach and passion for holistic healing to the practice of naturopathic medicine. His expertise stems from his years as a clinical faculty member at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, where he balanced his time between supervising the education of new naturopathic doctors and operating his private practice.

Since 2015, he has served on the King County Council — Seattle Transitional Grant Area HIV Planning Council, which is responsible for the allocation of Ryan White Federal Funds earmarked for local HIV Care.

Dr. Milkis is the co-author of the chapter on HIV/AIDS in the Textbook of Natural Medicine, 3rd and 4th editions, the definitive resource on naturopathic care and treatment.

Dr. Milkis’ education includes a BA degree in Physical Anthropology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. After spending the early part of his working life in the television business, he realized that was not his calling, deciding to return to school to complete his Doctor in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University. After a two-year postgraduate residency, he became a member of the clinical faculty at the Bastyr Center, while devoting time to his private practice. Early-bird pricing through August 31, 2023.

Alan R. Gaby, MD, received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, his master of science in biochemistry from Emory University, and his doctor of medicine from the University of Maryland. He is past president of the American Holistic Medical Association and gave expert testimony to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the cost-effectiveness of nutritional supplements. He is the author of numerous books and scientific papers in the field of nutritional medicine. He was professor of nutrition and a member of the clinical faculty at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, from 1995 to 2002. In 2011, he completed a 30-year project, the textbook Nutritional Medicine, and has recently completed the updated second edition of the book.

We are highlighting just one of the amazing speakers. Each week we will give you a peek at what each of our incredible and qualified presenters will talk about. Today: Aims Babich. The topic: "Addressing Barriers to Healthcare for Marginalized Populations"
This session will consist of:
1) reviewing bodies that experience the most discrimination and disparities in healthcare settings (including BIPOC individuals, TGNCI folks, and people living in larger bodies)
2) addressing additional considerations when working working with intersectional populations
3) tangible ways to create inclusive and affirming intake processes and office settings
3) recommendations on how to create an accessible practice.

Aims Babich (they/them) has been practicing in the alternative healthcare field for eight years as a massage therapist, Reiki practitioner, and trauma informed bodyworker. They have also been working in the mental health field supporting individuals with eating disorders and disordered eating, complex trauma, and the LGBQA+ and TGNCI community for five years. Aims is passionate about DEI work, mutual aid, and harm reduction, and places an emphasis on these approaches in their consultation and trainings.

And for today....As an integral part of his practice, Dr. Blanchet has focused on early diagnosis and prevention of disease. To that end, coronary artery disease is the lowest hanging fruit; our #1 cause of death and disability, usually undiagnosed until an event occurs and often inadequately or inappropriately treated.

Dr. Blanchet is a nationally recognized expert on the early detection of heart disease and prevention of heart attacks. He is a frequent guest on local television and radio in the Boulder, area and has appeared on Public TVs “Second Opinion”.

The UlraFast heart scan plays an important role in his coronary prevention algorithm. The coronary calcium score is a most valuable tool, very accurate, inexpensive, low radiation and often ignored or shunned by old school Cardiologists. In his experience, with coronary calcium imaging understood and appropriately applied, symptomatic heart disease and coronary death have been nearly extinguished.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Scott McMahon as a keynote speaker at CoAND's upcoming conference, October 6-7, 2023, in Westminster, CO. Dr. McMahon's keynote address is: “State of the Art CIRS Diagnosis and Treatment”

In this presentation, Dr. McMahon will discuss the medical literature supporting CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome), the three peer-reviewed published methods for making the diagnosis and the peer-reviewed and published components of the treatment protocol.

Dr. Scott McMahon obtained a BS in Chemistry in 1985, his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine in 1989 and completed his Pediatric Residency at Duke University Medical Center in 1992. He has practiced in Roswell, NM since 1992. He worked in primary care pediatrics for 28 years and began learning about CIRS in 2009.

Dr. McMahon was the first physician certified in the Shoemaker Protocol for treatment of CIRS. Trained by Dr. Shoemaker himself, he has also collaborated in research, authored or co-authored more than a dozen scientific papers and three medical textbook chapters, presented at national conferences, taught Proficiency Partners, testified as an expert in eight states and co-authored and co-edited a book on CIRS.

He has evaluated nearly 2000 patients for CIRS in his practice in Roswell, New Mexico. He is a founder of CIRSx and is building a community within a community for CIRS patients called “The Oasis New Mexico.”
