In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is associated with the lungs and large intestine. The emotion of this season is grief. This can feel like an especially difficult transition and season for many of us
Just as nature changes with the seasons, so do our bodies. I’ve seen many patients in clinic the last few weeks struggling both emotionally and physically. During this time of year, it’s common that those who have imbalances in their lung and large intestine channels will experience symptoms such as constipation, skin problems, a variety of respiratory illnesses, and breathing issues. Anyone who has experienced or experiences grief, may find themselves more affected by it 😞
Like this energetic shift in nature, look for ways to start slowing down. If you can, explore ways to invite in more time for rest. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and dietary modifications can be really helpful ways to manage this transition and these symptoms.
A moderate amount of pungent foods in your diet such as ginger, garlic, horseradish, mustard, and onion are beneficial to the lungs in the fall. Cooked, warm foods are also beneficial. Excess cold and damp foods such as dairy are better to be reduced during this time, to avoid excess build up of phlegm in our systems (which likes to collect in our lungs during in the fall).
Sending love to everyone having a hard time 💛
