What is Juneteenth?

Most are familiar with an Independence Day celebration on the 4th of July. However, when the United States became free in 1776, Black people weren’t freed from slavery. Black people were not declared free for another 87 years.

Even still, it took 2 years after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation for the last enslaved people to be freed in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

This week, the Denver City Council recognized the five-year anniversary of Denver’s Support Team Assisted Response (STAR) program.

Launched on June 1, 2020, as a pilot in downtown Denver, STAR was created to provide an alternative, community-based response to those in crisis. Instead of traditional law enforcement, STAR teams - made up of mental health professionals and paramedics - respond to non-violent 911 calls related to mental health crises, substance use issues and poverty.

In just five years, STAR has been successfully dispatched to more than 15,000 calls citywide, bringing care and compassion to those in need in our community.

The program is a collaborative effort between Denver Health, Denver Health Paramedics, WellPower, Denver Police Department, and the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment - working together to reimagine public safety through a health-first approach.

👏 Congratulations to the STAR responders and partners on five years of dedicated service to the City and County of Denver!
