Our original medicine is food! And what makes our food taste good is herbs! Common kitchen herbs are some of the easiest and most important way to keep us healthy!
One of the first herbs popping up in Denver are Chives. Unfortunately mine got dug up by Ruthie this year…🤦🏼♀️ so I had to plant fresh ones. Chives are one of the easiest things to grab and throw into any dish!
In Chinese medicine- we use it to clear wind cold- as in it’s your first go to when you feel a cold coming on. Boil up chives and garlic and drink it down.
Here’s some of the benefits:
Enhances Bone Health: Chives are rich in Vitamin K, which is vital for maintaining bone density and preventing conditions like osteoporosis.
Boosts Immunity: They are a great source of Vitamin C, which stimulates the production of white blood cells to fight infections.
Supports Heart Health: Chives contain allicin and quercetin—antioxidants linked to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, reduced blood pressure, and better blood vessel function.
Improves Memory: Chives provide choline and folate, nutrients that support cognitive function, memory retention, and overall brain health.
Aids Digestion: Traditional remedies and dietary fiber in chives can stimulate appetite, reduce stomach upset, and promote a healthy gut microbiome.
Anticancer Properties: As members of the allium family, chives contain thiosulfinates. These phytonutrients have been shown to stop the spread of certain cancer cells.
