We offer food distribution programming and educational opportunities related to growing and cooking food, as well as overall wellness. We strive to be a community-driven organization, meaning that our goal is to have all programs led and implemented by members of our community or others from similar neighborhoods. We are successful when the youth, families, and communities we work with are empowered to feed, nourish and strengthen themselves and each other.

This Earth Month, we’re proud to reaffirm our commitment to environmental stewardship. All year long, The GrowHaus works alongside its partners and neighbors to care for our planet, knowing that the actions we take today will impact the quality of life of future generations.
Together, we’re cultivating a more sustainable and equitable food system by sourcing rescued and local produce, sharing community education about reducing food waste and eating seasonally, and planting vegetable seedlings alongside our neighbors in Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea, communities impacted by decades of pollution, divestment, and limited access to fresh food.

We are thrilled to announce that the Denver Broncos Foundation will be supporting our Seed2Seed program through a generous grant award! Seed2Seed supports the food security, mental health, and career pathways of teens from our home communities of Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea (GES), a majority Latino immigrant community where 99% of youth lack healthy food access within one mile.
Through an 8-week summer intensive and engagement points throughout the year, local teens explore the meaning of food justice and ways to be positive forces of change, while building a lifelong foundation of healthy habits. Teens learn about our food system, environmental justice, and wellness habits by engaging in passion projects, volunteering, interactive discussions, and excursions to community organizations. Cooking and nutrition are core components of the program, allowing teens to practice teamwork and explore their identity by celebrating the cultural significance of various foods, and learn about the nutritional qualities of different ingredients. We can’t wait to welcome this year’s cohort and support their journeys!

This week, some gorgeous Colorado-grown potatoes stole the show in our no-cost Food Access program! These special spuds were harvested at Strohauer Farms in La Salle.
Fresh foods like these ensure our neighbors can set their tables with ingredients that create moments of joy and connection. Participants of The GrowHaus’ Food Access program receive over 20 pounds of seasonal fruits and vegetables every other week! Especially during peak growing season, The GrowHaus prioritizes sourcing food from local farms, food rescue organizations, and food hubs to ensure families experiencing food insecurity have access to high-quality produce grown right here in Colorado.

Maria Elena began working at The GrowHaus packing fresh food boxes during the pandemic, and has grown into her position as Food Access Manager, where she oversees the annual distribution of over 1 million pounds of fresh food. In this leadership role, Maria Elena manages and supports the growth of a team of Food Access Associates, ensures our food access hub is fully compliant with all local and state food safety requirements, and stewards partnerships with community hubs across Denver to ensure neighbors can conveniently access fresh food at one of our 28 food access sites. She also leads communication with over 1,000 households participating in our Food Access program, ensuring they receive pick-up reminders and have opportunities to provide feedback.
Maria Elena is a mother and an important leader at our organization. She says, “The women leaders at The GrowHaus not only make strategic decisions, but also build strong relationships and work with a human-centered approach that strengthens our impact. We inspire other women—in my case, including my daughters—to see themselves in leadership roles without limits.”

The GrowHaus Education team recently guided 15 students from the Boys & Girls Club through a hands-on burrito recipe featuring nutritious ingredients like peppers and avocado. More than just a cooking lesson, this workshop helped children build essential life skills, from nutrition to teamwork, supporting the development of healthy habits.
The GrowHaus is grateful for the continued partnership with the local Boys & Girls Clubs, whose collaboration helps us expand fresh food access and nutrition education to more children and neighbors across Denver. Together, we’re strengthening food distribution efforts and prioritizing community wellness through engaging, hands-on classes like this one.

Through The GrowHaus’ home visit program, our Promotoras (Community Health Specialists), meet neighbors in their home kitchens to teach simple, nutritious recipes. Over the past three months, our Promotoras have shared recipes and peer-to-peer cooking classes with nearly 50 community members, including busy parents, young children, and older adults, all of whom benefit from Promotoras’ patient, informative teaching style and the opportunity for community connection.

At The GrowHaus, leadership is cultivated across generations. Women step into leadership at every stage of life, from youth leaders to grandmothers who carry cultural knowledge and lived experience. Many members of our team are part of women-led households, where leadership already exists in the ways families sustain themselves and make decisions. The GrowHaus builds on this powerful expertise by creating pathways for women to guide programs, lead initiatives, and shape organizational direction. Our focus is on long-term, sustainable impact led by the community itself. Before Women’s History Month ends, share your gratitude for the women leaders in your life!
