Functional Fungi Farmer

I’ve always felt a strong connection to the healing power Mother Nature. With a last name like Cave how could one not feel a connection with the earth? My relationship with nature was activated in a much deeper way after I graduated from college. I really just loved exploring and it was a meditative practice where I wasn’t thinking of the past or future; I was simply present. Just a few years after graduation my father, Larry Cave, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). My dad was given 3-5 years to live; he died at the age of 50 and I was just 25. I realized that I could not control my genetics and the only thing I do have control of is the food I eat. My self-love revolution began with a crash course in nutrition.

I worked in natural & organic retail for about 10 years but wasn’t fulfilled with the impact I was making. Then I stumbled upon an opportunity to work with a solar company. It was a chance to increase my income and my impact on the planet, so I was all in. It was a wild ride but ultimately I lost that job in March of 2017. I decided to take my time and watch for signs from the universe for the next step in my career.

My partner, Bryan House, noticed a course in Radical Mycology by author and educator, Peter McCoy; we briefly discussed how fascinating it would be to obtain knowledge of mushroom cultivation. The signs of synchronicity then began to unfold. I went to a conference in Santa Cruz, CA and met a man named Soma; at the time I didn’t know the significance. Shortly after my return, Bryan and I were visiting with friends from our community. I discussed my longing to find my purpose and to discover a career that would help me fulfill that purpose. So, my friend had me pull some cards from a tarot deck; the first card I pulled was Soma, a mushroom card. She then advised me that she had a feeling a job opportunity would reveal itself upon visiting our friends at Be Love Too Farm. As we visited the farm we were told about a mushroom farmer in Lawrence, Kansas who was looking for a business partner to help him with his grow space inside of an underground cave in Kansas City. I raised my hand and said, “My name is Carie Cave and I am interested in the opportunity to grow mushrooms in a cave.”

I began working with Wakarusa Valley Farm in July of 2017 and we attended the Radical Mycology course in August 2017. We were fascinated by all of the possibilities of being part of the Mycelial Network. Peter McCoy talked about fungi being one of the most crucial and influential components of our ecosystem; yet as a whole, the planet has not been devoting the amount of research it deserves. Cave Cultivated Creations (C3) was launched as a business in October 2017. Currently we are operating in partnership with Wakarusa Valley Farm, supplying local restaurants and markets with organic culinary mushrooms. As we obtain investment and expand our growing capacity we will employ a greater emphasis on functional fungi.

Ultimately we intend to have a full line of branded C3 products incorporating fungi. C3 will make it fun, easy and educational to include mushrooms as part of one’s everyday diet. With unique product packaging and innovative cultivation techniques, we will be competitive with companies such as Fungi Perfecti and Four Sigmatic.
