November is National Diabetes Month. Native people experience higher rates of diabetes than other groups. Small changes - like staying active, eating balanced meals, and getting regular checkups - can make a big difference.
DIHFS has many resources and programs for our relatives with diabetes. The wellness department offers diabetes education classes, nutrition counseling, and physical fitness coaching. Our primary care providers and pharmacy team provide education, monitoring, and medication management. We are here to support our patients in living their healthiest lives!

Gabriella Gombas started her internship with DIHFS during the second year of her master's program in 2023, and joined the Behavioral Health team as a full-time Behavioral Health Therapist and Integrated Care Clinician in the summer of 2024!
Gabriella is a member of Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She achieved a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University. She minored in Applied Behavioral Science, and during her education she worked as a preschool teacher for several years, before graduating from the University of Denver with her master's in counseling psychology in 2024.
About her work, Gabriella says "My approach to mental health care is holistic and patient specific. I enjoy working with a variety of patients and I am working to have a special focus on youth. I try to tailor my approach to each person's needs and perspectives. I believe we are all wonderfully unique and our time in therapy should also be unique! I also believe that mental health should be holistic and should consider our physical and spiritual health. I love to find ways to bring culture and traditional knowledge into my practice based on patient needs and interests."
"My main goal is to complete my licensure here at DIHFS and continue to expand my knowledge and skills in the mental health field. Eventually I would like to lead research and possibly pursue a PhD to create a stronger voice for Urban Native American populations in academia."
Outside of work, Gabriella loves to be outdoors with friends and family, backpacking, hiking, camping, skiing, and biking. She also enjoys beading and attending powwows where she is continuing her journey as a scrub/woodland dancer. "At home I enjoy gardening, finding a great movie, staying active, and trying a new recipe. I have one cat named Cornelius Nugget or Corn for short, and he is the light of my life."

We are Denver's only Urban Indian Health clinic providing culturally-competent health services; including medical, dental, behavioral, and support.
We provide health services to American Indian families and individuals; DIHFS is also a Medicaid enrollment site and a Connect For Health Colorado (C4HCO) enrollment site.
Our Mission is to provide culturally appropriate services that promote health and quality of life for American Indian families and individuals in the Metropolitan Denver area. Denver was one of the original sites for relocation of Native people from their home reservations. Today, Denver continues to be a hub for American Indian people, with an estimated population of 40,000.
Denver Indian Health and Family Services was created as the result of a needs assessment conducted by the Denver Native Americans United. The doors were closed, however, in 1991 because of the large number of uninsured patients and because of the inability to charge American Indian patients.
Through the efforts of young Indian physician, Dr. Lori Kobrine, the clinic met the requirements for state licensure. DIHFS continues to grow. Since May 2000, the clinic has been staffed with full-time nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, behavioral specialists, and a volunteer physician who provide medical services to the community on a full-time basis.
