This is problematic on so many levels 🤦🏽‍♀️
1.) therapists should not be recommending specific medications. Period. It is out of our scope. I never even recommend SSRIs, because that is out of my scope. I recommend when my clients may need to consult with a prescriber who specializes in that service, but there’s no way for me to know which specific meds they should try. Recommending a GLP-1 with little information about symptoms and background is unethical
2.) While there are many driving forces behind “food noise”, for those engaging in disordered eating patterns, often food noise is simply hunger. A GLP-1 will often exacerbate the underlying problem- not resolve it. Before being prescribed a GLP-1, patients should always be assessed for a history of ED, as this could be contraindicated for this medication.
3.) if you don’t specialize in the issue at hand, why comment and make recommendations at all? Especially when there are already specialists in the group making meaningful and helpful recommendations? It is appropriate in to stay in your lane. I will never make recommendations for issues I don’t specialize in. I defer to people who are better informed than I am.
