You don’t have to be certain something is wrong before asking for help. Many parents we speak with share the same reflection once their teen begins eating disorder treatment: “I wish I would have acted sooner.”

If you’re unsure, an assessment can give you clarity and next steps. Contact EDCare for a free, confidential adolescent assessment. https://eatingdisorder.care/programs/adolescent-partial-hospitalization-program/

In this series, Bryn Miller, LPC, CEDS-C, Advisor of Family Services at EDCare, answers common questions about Emotion Focused Family Therapy and how it strengthens families and support networks. This post highlights who can be involved in EFFT and the importance of a whole support system.

Question: Is EFFT only for parents, or can partners and other caregivers be involved?

Answer: That's a fantastic question—and the answer is a resounding no, it's not just for parents! We know that healing requires a whole support network. So, whether it's a partner, an adult sibling, a grandparent, or a very close friend, anyone who genuinely cares and is willing to step up can be mobilized in EFFT to help build that crucial emotional safety net.

Figure skater Amber Glenn tells PEOPLE she's hoping to qualify for her first Olympic games when they come to Milan in 2026 after years of ups and downs in her career and personal life.

The idea of a New Year reset can be tempting, but for those in eating disorder recovery, it can also trigger unhelpful cycles of “all or nothing.” Here's why a mindset of ongoing care and consistency is more supportive than a fresh start narrative.

The urge to "start over" for the new year feels hopeful. In eating disorders, that same impulse can either support recovery or quietly pull people back into harmful patterns.

Bryn Miller, LPC, CEDS-C, Advisor of Family Services at EDCare, answers frequently asked questions about Emotion Focused Family Therapy and its role in eating disorder recovery in this ongoing series. This post introduces what EFFT is and how it supports caregivers and loved ones in the healing process.

Question: What is EFFT and how does it help with eating disorders?

Answer: EFFT, or Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, is such a wonderful, effective approach! Think of it as a laser-focused, short-term treatment designed to mend emotional wounds and connection gaps within a family that are often feeding into a loved one's challenges. The goal is to train family members to become active agents of change by helping their loved one feel seen and emotionally supported so they can let go of using behaviors to cope.

The New Year often brings diet talk and weight-loss expectations, but this is your reminder that restrictive dieting doesn’t build lasting wellbeing. Approaches that honor hunger, fullness, and comfort help support a healthier, kinder relationship with food and self.

Instead of looking for new ways to lose weight, consider taking an intuitive eating approach, which teaches us to tune into our body’s signals so that we eat what we need and when we’re hungry

What if, this year, we gave ourselves permission to stay as we are? What if we declined the persistent invitation to reinvent ourselves and instead, learned to have a balanced, functional, even joyous relationship with food and our bodies?

Trying to shrink yourself, trying to take up as little space in this world as possible and trying to control your body lead only to anguish. If you do one thing for yourself this January, remember that.
