Anchor Center for Blind Children teaches visually impaired infants, young children and their families, providing hope and a nurturing environment where children reach their highest potential. Anchor Center is the only privately funded organization in Colorado (and one of a handful nationwide) that provides early intervention/developmental education services to very young children with visual impairment. With an operating budget over $2 million, we rely heavily on individual donations to ensure our programs continue to meet the needs of Colorado’s children with vision loss.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

Today we’re shining a light on our remarkable partners at Children's Eye Physicians whose leadership and commitment have shaped Anchor Center’s in-house Eye Clinic since its founding in 2007.

Each month, their team—led today by the wonderful Dr. Annie Steele—provides on-site eye exams for our children, bringing highly specialized pediatric ophthalmology directly into an environment that feels familiar, comforting, and supportive for our little learners. These monthly clinics ensure that families receive timely evaluations, reduced wait times, and care tailored uniquely to children with low vision and brain-based visual impairments.

Their early vision—championed by Dr. Robert King—established one of the first clinics in the nation to integrate pediatric ophthalmology with the therapeutic and educational expertise of a nonprofit setting like Anchor Center. It remains an innovative model of collaboration that continues to benefit our families today.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Steele and the entire Children’s Eye Physicians team for their partnership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to our mission.

🍕Welcome to the Anchor Center Pizza Parlor! 🍕

As part of our food unit, our preschoolers enjoyed a sensory-rich, hands-on pizza-making adventure designed for every child to explore and enjoy.

Little hands got to knead soft, squishy dough, feel the cool smoothness of the sauce, and explore the unique textures of toppings—from fluffy cheese to round pepperoni slices. We can confirm that a few ingredients made their way straight into little mouths instead of onto the dough… and why not? That’s part of the fun! 😄

With thoughtful guidance and inclusive adaptations, every child had the opportunity to craft their own delicious creation. The Anchor Center Pizza Parlor was filled with excitement as our mini chefs experienced the pride and joy of making something all on their own.

A huge thank-you to our incredible staff for making this sensory learning experience such a success! ❤️

TREMENDOUS TUESDAYS: MEET TEVILLIA

"It’s hard to believe how far Tevillia has come! She’s been part of the Anchor Center family since she was just 5 months old, when she had her first functional vision assessment after being diagnosed at 4 months. We were so thankful that Anchor Center was one of the first places recommended to us.

Now, at 4 years old and in her second year of preschool, we’ve seen incredible growth in her confidence, skills, and personality. Anchor Center has truly been a place of discovery, challenge, and joy.

Her favorite parts of school? Definitely being outside, the playground, and the motor room! Through her time at Anchor, she’s learned so many valuable skills that will help her as she moves on to kindergarten and beyond — from using her white cane and magnification devices to advocating for herself when she needs support.

We’re so proud of Tevillia and grateful for her journey at Anchor Center."
— Virginia (Teviliia's mom)

Thank you to Front Porch Newspaper for stopping by yesterday to celebrate White Cane Safety Day with us! Such a wonderful article about our Anchor Center community and Denver Public Schools students (many of whom are alumni of Anchor Center) coming together to shine a light on the capabilities of individuals who are blind or visually impaired and to teach our broader community about the importance of accessibility and inclusion.

White Cane Day, established on October 15,1964, is celebrated across the country, including at the Anchor Center for Blind Children in northeast Denver.

Thank you to 9NEWS (KUSA) for stopping by yesterday and putting together such a beautiful piece to cover White Cane Safety Day with our Anchor Center community and alumni from Denver Public Schools. It was a beautiful day walking through our neighborhood to celebrate the use of white canes by our blind and visually impaired students.

🦯 Today is White Cane Safety Day, a special day celebrated every October 15th to honor the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired, and to recognize the white cane as a powerful symbol of independence. 🦯

At Anchor Center, we marked the day with a community walk to our local park, enjoyed a picnic lunch, and had some playground fun, all while being joined by students, families, friends, and some very special guests.

We were especially excited to welcome older students from , — many of them proud Anchor Center alumni — who walked side by side with our current students. Seeing them together, canes in hand, was a moving reminder of growth, confidence, and community.

It was inspiring for everyone involved, and we’re so excited to carry on this beautiful tradition for years to come.
