“A lot of the programs that people rely on for the safety net were produced for an economy that existed 100 years ago. So, how can we take disruption and channel it towards a better path forward is also what I want to spend time on. How do we solve the problem, not just for today and next year?”

Candid insights | Impacted by federal funding cuts, leaders of shelters and housing nonprofits are changing the narrative around homelessness to continue serving unhoused people in their communities.

"While over-the-counter purchases may account for a relatively small share of naloxone distribution, they are an important way to allow lower-risk people to contribute while letting harm-reduction groups focus on those most likely to respond to an overdose."

Most hospitals already offer naloxone to anyone treated for an opioid overdose, but two hospitals are investigating whether it makes sense to give it out more broadly.

"The debate about sheltering homeless families in Denver is happening at a time when family homelessness is growing rapidly across Colorado and the country.

According to the latest snapshot data, Colorado saw a 134% spike in family homelessness in 2024 due primarily to the rising cost of housing in the city."

Denver’s rejection of a $9 million amendment for family shelters shows the struggle cities face to fund humane responses to family homelessness.

"Cole pushed back against the idea that homelessness is a personal failure.

'People don’t choose this,' she said. 'It’s circumstances. Things snowball quickly: an accident, an illness, mental health, a job loss. Most people are much closer to homelessness than they realize.'"

Story and Photos by Giles Clasen Tammy Charbonneau stood quietly as she listened to the names read, her hands clutching a candle and a program. She had come to the 2025 We Will Remember: Homeless Persons’ Memorial Vigil to honor her son, Thomas, who died on Mother’s Day. “I miss him every day,...

For the 36th year, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (CCH or the Coalition) hosted the “We Will Remember: Homeless Persons' Memorial Vigil” at the Denver City and County Building on Sunday evening. The candlelight vigil and name-reading ceremony was attended by hundreds of housed and unhoused community members and paid tribute to those who died while experiencing homelessness in 2025.

This year's program included songs by the Denver Chorale, opening and closing remarks by Britta Fisher, a eulogy by Randle Loeb, and the reading of names by local service provider organizations. In addition, this year Denver organizers were proud to partner with the Homeless Memorial Blanket Project, which is both an art display and an opportunity for generous blanket makers to knit, crochet, and quilt special gifts for neighbors far and wide who are experiencing homelessness. After the display, the blankets and quilts were donated to individuals and families in the Denver area who are in need of housing.

View the event program listing the 276 names of those honored at this event on our website coloradocoalition.org/vigil.
