We visited Wishgarden Herbs this weekend. What a special experience!! The owner, Catherine, led every aspect of the lecture and tour. It was wonderful to hear her story and learn about the integrity from which Wishgarden operates.

We were SO inspired to see this female-owned, family-operated company go from such humble beginnings in the 1980s to a large-scale operation that is rooted in the right things - caring about the quality and integrity of each product and also caring about the farmers that grow the plants they use for tincturing. We were elated from that experience!

Check out and try out their herbal tinctures. They’re the real deal!

Our instructor, Kimberly, taught a Women’s Holistic Health class to our herbalism students.

One part of the class covered her Top 5 Women’s Health Allies. One of those is this plant, Motherwort. Leonaurus cardiaca, which means lions heart. It’s in the Lamiaceae family (Mints).

Kim had so much Motherwort growing in her garden that she brought a plant for each student! Motherwort is pure magic for supporting the emotional and physical heart.

“Motherwort is like getting a hug from your Momma.”

Our tag line is: “From seed to medicine”. Gardening is an important part of our program because we think herbalists should also learn to be connected with the plants outside of the apothecary jars. It’s empowering to know how to grow, harvest, & make medicine from the plants you tend to. What can you do now to prepare?

1. Prepare your Garden beds.
2. Prepare the soil.
3. Seed starting. Indoors for warm season crops & outside for frost tolerant ones.
4. Prepare your tools.
5. Clean pots & containers.
6. Look for a community garden to join if you don’t have a yard or the space.
7. Plan for indoor plants if you don’t have a yard (& because you want some inside with you)
8. Design your dream garden. Like a dream vision board.

We love this time of year!! 🌱

Words from Martin, one of our instructors, about why he loves Sexy Sherry:

“So often when we come home to our partner, our roommates, or to our family & the first question we hear is ‘How was your day?’ & our answer every time ‘Fine’. There has been no exchange in this moment. Neither side sought to be close & to truly share themselves in a meaningful way. We isolate & forget that loving people is sharing your heart every day.

Sexy Sherry is more than a drink, it is a ritual. Every evening I sit with my loved one & sip on one ounce of Sexy Sherry. I know when I taste the intoxicating flavor that my heart will be felt in my chest & opened. I can take the time to reflect on my day. How did I feel? What were my reflections & moods? Was I inspired with hope? Discouraged by hardships? I share all of my true thoughts & feelings so that I can be known & in exchange my loved one shares their heart so that I can know. Even when I am home alone at the end of my day I will practice this ritual so that I am aware of my own heart & communing with myself.

Sexy Sherry facilitates love & desire & true intimacy. Sexy Sherry reminds us to build and maintain our relationships to ourselves and others.”

~ Thank you, Martin, for these beautiful words!

The word Cordial is derived from the latin word, “cordials” meaning “of or for the heart.”

Check out our Sexy Sherry Cordial Recipe in the images. The jar will look SO beautiful in your kitchen while the herbs are extracting into the cream sherry!

Could you make this Non-Alcoholic? But, yes! We love NA options!

Use all of the same ingredients (minus the sherry) & make a syrup instead & take it by the tablespoon for best results.

How to make these ingredients as a Syrup? Put the herbs in 2 cups of water. Slow simmer to 1 cup. Strain & add in a cup of honey. Keep refrigerated for 2 weeks.

Use a tablespoon (or two) of this Sexy Sherry Syrup in a glass of sparking water. Garnish the alcohol cordial or the NA one with a twisted orange peel or a split vanilla bean.

An Oxymel is a sweet & sour herbal preparation made using a blend of honey & apple cider vinegar. The name comes from the Greek “oxymeli”, which means “acid & honey”. There are numerous health benefits from the herbs chosen for the blend, as well as from the honey & vinegar. Some of those benefits: antioxidant rich, immune support, digestive health, & sore throat relief. Check out our Garlic Pepper Oxymel recipe. Super easy to make, delicious flavors, & healthy!

Stinging Nettle - Latin: Urtica dioica - Plant Family: Urticaceae

Such a delicious super-food herb that is in the Nutritive Herb category, a class of herbs that are known for their high amounts of minerals, trace minerals, and vitamins.

Stinging Nettle can be added to an allergy relief tincture formula, as part of a refreshing tea spritzer, in smoothies, as a dinner side-dish like steamed spinach, as dehydrated chips, as the main feature in a pesto, as a soup, as seasoning, and as a fertilizer/compost activator. Such an amazing plant!

As its name implies, the plant will sting you & cause irritation when touched so you need to wear thick gloves & long sleeve shirts/pants when harvesting. It’s best to harvest them in the early spring, before they bloom so they are tastier & more tender. & keep them from flowering to keep the best taste - snip off the top 6 - 8 in of the plant to prevent it from flowering & harvest every 1 - 2 weeks.

To inactive the stingers once harvested - heat it, dehydrate it, or break the stingers with a rolling pin or with a food processor. Blanching is a nice way to do this (use tongs) - quick 1 - 2 min boil of the fresh leaves then submerge them in an ice bath to stop the cooking. Squeeze the water out (stingers are deactivated now). Et voila - ready for consumption!

Use Nettles with caution in pregnancy & not for long-term use. Rotate use every 2 - 3 weeks.
