In addition, the program uniquely includes classes on soil preparation, gardening, and field trips to the mountains, so that each student can personally connect and be empowered to grow, identify, and understand the life cycle of plants. The herbalist program also includes classes on folk medicine, the traditional and ancient uses of herbal medicine from a variety of cultures. There will also be classes and practice with medicine making, wildcrafting, as well as herbal intakes/evaluations, therapeutic herbalism sessions, working with an herbal apothecary, and working at community gardens.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments are the simplest ones 🌿

A small bloom, growing right outside our doors… a reminder that nature is always offering something, if we slow down enough to notice it.

In herbalism, we learn to see the value in what’s around us. Not just in the big, obvious plants, but in the quiet ones too. The ones that support, nourish, and connect us back to the earth in a meaningful way.

There is so much wisdom in nature. And when we take the time to observe it, to understand it, we begin to deepen not only our knowledge but our relationship with it.

This is the heart of Herbalism Roots. Learning to find beauty, purpose, and healing in the world around you.

What’s something in nature you’ve noticed lately? 🌱

Martin introduces us to the different types of ginseng and how each one offers its own unique kind of support.

All of these are incredible adaptogens, meaning they help the body adapt to stress and support overall balance.

Not all ginseng works the same way. In herbalism, we look at how an herb feels in the body and choose based on what kind of support is needed.

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is known to be more cooling.
Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) tends to be more warming and stimulating.
Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is considered more neutral.

Understanding these differences helps guide more thoughtful, personalized choices whether you’re working with yourself or supporting someone else.

It’s a reminder that herbalism isn’t one size fits all, it’s about learning to listen and respond to what the body needs.

🪴Internship Feature🪴

At The Urban Farm, a 20 acre space in Denver, community, education, and sustainability come together. Students and youth are involved in every step from seeding to harvest, learning how food systems work while giving back to their community. With thousands of pounds of food donated each year, the impact reaches far beyond the farm itself.

David DeMalteris plays a key role in leading this work, creating meaningful hands on learning experiences that support both people and the land.

🌼What a magical weekend at Herbalism Roots!🌺

Our Medicine Making Weekend brought together incredible students who dove deep into the art of herbal craft. They learned the percolation method of extraction, a supercharged alcohol extraction that draws out the herb’s full power in just days, to create a beautiful cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) percolation.

Then there was Plant Spirit Healing, one of the program’s most beloved parts. Watching the students embrace this profound practice for releasing stress, trauma, and what no longer serves them is something words can barely capture. Our students continue to inspire us every time. Every moment was pure magic.

Winter plant study doesn’t stop when the leaves fall.

Kim and Martin are sharing a couple of their favorite field guides for winter plant identification. Learning to recognize bark, branching patterns, seed pods, and plant structure can help you identify species even in the colder months.

A great reminder that plant knowledge grows in every season.

Sore muscles happen to all of us. Long workdays, workouts, or time on your feet can leave your body feeling it.

In the Herbalism Roots program, students learn how to make an Arnica Liniment, a traditional herbal preparation used to help soothe muscle soreness, strains, and sprains.

This formula includes supportive ingredients like:

🌿 Arnica Oil for sore muscles and bruising
🌿 Willow Bark a natural analgesic
🌿 Rosemary to help stimulate circulation
🌿 Menthol for a cooling, soothing effect

Hands on medicine making is a big part of the Herbalism Roots experience as students learn how to work with plants and create traditional herbal remedies.

Thai herbal compresses are bundles of Thai herbs and roots chopped into small pieces, wrapped in fabric, steam-heated to release the aromas, and then massaged into the body. Our school’s founder Hillary Hilliard was first introduced to the compresses when she was living in Thailand in 2004. For our Thai herbal compress making class the students make a traditional Thai herbal compress. Here Hillary is showing how to make one.
You can get the recipe and Hillary’s full article how Thai herbal compresses were her entry to herbal medicine on our website. Link in bio.
