Hi Everyone, Warning, shameless marketing about to happen! I've just written another book, Solving the Pain Puzzle: Cases from 25 Years as a Physical Therapist, which is coming out this Spring. I'm hoping (and this is a huge long shot!) to become the first PT on the NY Times Bestsellers List--why not shoot for the stars right? Anyway to get there I need to pre-sell a bunch of books. If you go to my www.rickolderman.com website, you'll see a tab that says Patient Stories. There you'll find a pre-sale link to the publisher's website as well as three stories from my new book you can read/listen to. I think it's a great book and I hope it inspires people to look for solutions to their pain because I believe they're out there. Anything you can do to spread the word would be welcome! Thanks everyone and hope your 2023 is going well!

Trigeminal neuralgia is an extremely painful condition that results in face, mouth, sinus, and head discomfort.

I’ve had success with the few patients that I’ve been able to see with this condition.

Take a few moments to read this article when you get a chance.

I've created an image that shows the relationship between the trigeminal nerve, the subnucleus caudalis (SC) that extends down to the cervical spine and is responsible for pain and temperature signals. You'll also see the involvement of the levator scapula muscle at the levels of the SC. I believe it is this relationship that I am affecting when I treat TN patients correcting the stress the levator scapula is placing at the vertebral level of the SC. I would love to see if I can help you with your TN. Please contact me if you're in pain.

Hi Everyone, I've created this page to help people with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). I've only seen 2 patients with TN and have helped both. I've helped another woman with TN through my book, Fixing You: Neck Pain & Headaches available on Amazon. The reason I'm focussed on TN, is that it is supposedly unsolvable from a conservative care (physical therapy, massage, chiropractic) standpoint. TN embodies my approach to solving difficult pain conditions, which is to see and treat the body as a system, as opposed to components, which is what traditional medicine does. The reason this embodies my approach is that the trigeminal nerve is a cranial nerve (originates in the brainstem) and therefore should not be able to be affected by anthing external to the skull. However I believe otherwise and my minimal success (only 3 people, but 100% of those 3 people!) leads me to believe that TN is another condition that can be solved using a systems approach, which is how I helped all three TN patients as well as others with chronic pain. At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to sell something, I've created a program that addresses the issues I've found to be causing, or significantly contributing to, TN. It's called Heal Your Headaches (because it solves most headaches--even migraines-- neck pain and shoulder problems. You can find it at www.FixingYourHeadaches.com. It's very affordable. If you purchase my program, please, please reach out to me and keep me apprised of your progress. I would eventually like to write up a case study or other research paper for publishing in a medical journal to explain how and why this approach works. You would potentially be helping thousands of others with this painful condition as a result of changing medical opinion about its root causes. Thank you!

Here's a recent TN patient story. Her pain is solved. I'd love to help you too.

"My face pain was causing anxiety and I was unable to chew food. It was a relief to find someone who understood Trigeminal Neuralgia and didn’t want to put me on medicine or more surgery. Rick helped me with tools and techniques, dry needling to relieve the pain. My face pain is gone. I am on a program that is great for improving my life."

A few years ago, I was in a cadaver lab and learned a very important lesson about trigeminal neuralgia. While the trigeminal nerve is a cranial nerve, its nucleus extends down into the cervical spine levels C2,3 of the spinal cord. One of the subnuclei, subnucleus caudalis, is responsible for pain and temperature. This is how I think I've helped my patients with this issue, by affecting those cervical levels through our unique techniques.

Treating Trigeminal Neuralgia with Physical Therapy

I’m Rick Olderman, physical therapist and I’ve been fortunate enough to help two people with trigeminal neuralgia eliminate their pain. I have a unique approach to treating injuries which seems to relieve this painful condition. I’d like to help you too.

The first person I helped was through reading my book, Fixing You: Neck Pain & Headaches. Here’s her story:

I am so glad I ordered your book. After two and a half years of severe pain on the left side of my head, around my left eye and a weird, extreme feeling of discomfort deep in my nose (a symptom I have not come across despite all my research, doctor's visits, etc) I read your book, did the all fours rocking stretch numerous times just this past Wednesday and the hand on head position, and now Saturday I am on day 4 of living pain free. You have literally given me my life back. I had in the fall of 2007 been on 3 antibiotics for what was assumed to be a sinus infection, then a negative sinus CT, visit to an ENT which included scoping up my nose, CT of my brain, an MRI and MRA of my brain, an MRI of my neck, onto a neurologist who insisted I had migraines, despite my telling her it was not a headache I have, but head pain (there is a difference) physical therapy appointments which caused increased pain due to aggressive massaging of trigger points, many chiropractic visits which did offer some relief, 4 months of yoga, and acupuncture which bring me to Dec. of 2009. I was just past Monday suffering from depression and despair thinking that this would be the rest of my life. I am 52 years old and before this in great health. Yours was the 4th book I have purchased on neck pain, but the only one that even mentioned the scapular and shoulder as being a probable cause. My husband is so happy that I have found an answer he has actually mentioned flying me to Colorado to be seen by you. I anxiously await the film clips that I have ordered and intend to continue the exercises. I have never written any kind of testimonial before but felt I needed to express my thanks to you. Your book has become my bible! Thank you again. Christine

The second person was an actual patient and my first, and only, referral from a doctor for trigeminal neuralgia. Within 3 treatments her pain was dramatically reduced. I’ve tried contacting doctors to refer more trigeminal neuralgia patients but with no success. I believe this is due to a lack of belief that physical therapy can help.
