April is Autism Acceptance Month, but what does “acceptance” look like? According to Mosaic CEO Linda Timmons, it starts by silencing the noise about what “causes” autism and actually listening to the people living it. Many autistic people aren’t seeking to be changed to meet society’s expectations. They are seeking a world that respects and supports them as they are. Jessica Eppel, State Operations Director, had the opportunity to speak with Senator Bridges of the Joint Budget Committee today to discuss a critical issue: protecting funding for our neighbors, friends, and family members with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

Right now, Colorado’s IDD community is facing a "Triple Threat" that could dismantle years of progress:

The Federal Hit (H.R. 1): The recent passage of H.R. 1 has triggered massive federal cuts to Medicaid—nearly $1 trillion nationally over the next decade. For Colorado, this means less federal support for the waivers that provide home-based care, therapies, and employment support for people with IDD.

The State Gap: Because of these federal rollbacks and rising costs, Colorado is staring down a staggering $1.5 billion budget shortfall for the upcoming year.

The TABOR Trap: Even though our state economy is productive, the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) caps the revenue the state can actually keep and spend. This prevents the legislature from using available funds to backfill the holes left by federal Medicaid cuts.

Thank you, Senator Bridges, for listening to our concerns. We’ll be watching the budget process closely to ensure the IDD community isn't left behind.
