April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month — a time to come together in support of children, families, and communities where every child feels safe, cared for, and valued.

At Centus, we believe prevention starts with connection. When caregivers feel supported, stress is reduced, and families have access to emotional and mental health care, children are better able to thrive. Strong families help build strong, healthy communities.

Here are two simple ways you can take part this month:
• Share resources that help families build connection, resilience, and support.
• Check in with the caregivers in your life — a kind word or listening ear can go a long way.

Every child deserves a safe, stable, and nurturing environment. Centus is honored to walk alongside families through counseling, education, and whole person mental health care — helping break cycles of harm and build brighter, healthier futures together.

At Centus, equity is not optional.

We are committed to expanding access to high-quality mental health care for communities historically under-served or excluded from services. This includes low-income clients, immigrants and refugees, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those exploring the intersection of mental health and spirituality.

We are actively building a diverse workforce grounded in cultural humility, and we provide culturally responsive care rooted in dignity, respect, and healing.

Mental health care should be accessible.

We are honored to walk alongside our community. Support our work by visiting centus.org.

🌟 Clinician Spotlight: Kim Godell, MS, LPC 🌟
We’re excited to highlight Kim Godell, whose curiosity, compassion, and dedication shine through in her work every day.

💬 What inspired Kim to pursue this field?
Kim has always been fascinated by people and the experiences that shape how we think and feel. She saw how powerful it is to feel understood and wanted to help others make sense of their patterns and build confidence in themselves.

💛 What she enjoys most about working with clients:
Kim loves seeing clients begin to treat themselves with compassion instead of criticism. Watching someone respond differently in situations that once overwhelmed them is especially meaningful. She’s also deeply committed to clients involved with the Department of Human Services — including grandparents stepping into parenting roles, children in foster care, and parents working hard to rebuild stability.

✨ A meaningful success moment:
Kim finds the biggest impact often shows up in small shifts — like when a client says, “Normally I would have reacted differently, but I didn’t this time.” Those moments represent real, gradual change.

🌿 Outside the office:
Kim enjoys staying active and spending time with her family — skiing, golfing, traveling, being outdoors, and cheering her kids on at their sporting events.

🎯 What she’s excited about this year:
She’s looking forward to helping clients apply therapy skills more easily in everyday life, especially around anxiety, relationships, and emotional regulation.

Help us celebrate Kim and the impactful work she does! 💙

Struggling with low mood or depression? Your sleep might be playing a bigger role than you think.

Emerging research shows a strong connection between untreated sleep apnea and symptoms of depression. When breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, oxygen levels drop — and that lack of oxygen can affect brain chemistry involved in mood regulation.

The encouraging news: CPAP therapy is linked to meaningful improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms or people with obstructive sleep apnea. By keeping the airway open and restoring steady oxygen flow through the night, CPAP helps the brain get the oxygen it needs to function at its best.

Better oxygen. Better sleep. Better mood. If you’ve been feeling persistently down and waking up tired, it might be worth talking with a healthcare professional about sleep apnea.

SUPPORTING A CHILD WHO MAY BE SELF HARMING
Self harm is not a behavior problem — it’s often connected to anxiety, depression, trauma, or difficulty regulating big emotions. Connection and skills work better than punishment.

What actually helps?
• Stay calm and curious instead of reactive
• Validate feelings even if you don’t understand the behavior
• Seek professional support early
• Build coping skills, emotional regulation, and safe expression

If you’re a parent or caregiver and you’re worried, you are not alone — and neither is your child. Healing happens through safe relationships, education, and compassionate support.

If your child is in immediate danger, call 988 or seek emergency services.

SELF-HARM IN KIDS & TEENS: FACTS VS. MYTHS
We’re hearing more about cutting and other self harm behaviors among youth — and along with it, a lot of fear and misinformation. Understanding the truth helps us respond with compassion instead of panic or shame.

🔎 MYTH: “Kids who cut are just trying to get attention.”
✅ FACT: Self harm is usually a coping strategy for overwhelming emotions — not manipulation. Many teens hide it.

🔎 MYTH: “If they’re cutting, they must be suicidal.”
✅ FACT: Self harm and su***de are not the same. Some youth use self injury to release emotional pain or regain control. It can raise risk, which is why support matters.

🔎 MYTH: “Talking about it will put the idea in their head.”
✅ FACT: Open, calm conversations reduce shame and increase safety. Asking directly shows kids they’re not alone.

At Centus, whole person care means meeting clients exactly where they are — and making sure they have access to the support they need.

This collaboration helps us ensure that every person we serve receives thoughtful, coordinated care from a team that communicates and works together.

By combining Centus’s counseling services with Alder Grove’s psychiatric expertise, we’re able to offer a more seamless, comprehensive experience for clients navigating their mental health journey.

We’re proud to highlight Kelsea Taylor, a clinician whose dedication to the field is rooted in personal experience and a deep commitment to supporting individuals and families affected by addiction.

Kelsea was inspired to pursue a career in therapy after witnessing addiction’s impact within her own family. That experience shaped her desire to help others navigate similar challenges and contribute to meaningful, long term change.

She finds great fulfillment in supporting clients as they identify their strengths, understand their “why,” and experience transformative moments of clarity. One of her most impactful professional experiences involved supporting a client who struggled with addiction for nearly 18 years and is now celebrating three years of sobriety, reunited with family, and thriving in her career.

Outside of her clinical work, Kelsea enjoys hiking, running, and spending time with her son and fiancé. She is also committed to ongoing professional development, particularly in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and in supporting individuals with complex trauma backgrounds.

We’re grateful for the compassion, presence, and expertise Kelsea brings to our team.
