-Let's Talk-

Safe Calm Place ❄️

Safe calm place is a grounding exercise that uses guided imagery to shift focus from distress to a peaceful, imagined (or real) location, engaging the senses (sights, sounds, smells, touch) to create a deep feeling of safety and relaxation, helping to interrupt anxiety, panic, or trauma responses by anchoring you in the present moment.

It's a key technique, especially in therapies like EMDR, to calm your nervous system and build internal resilience.

If you're experiencing depression and are waiting around to be motivated ...you'll be waiting a LONG time!

Remember to start small, breaking the activities down into smaller objectives.

Here are some actionable opposite actions!

Physical activity:

Get out of bed, shower, dress, and take a walk or go for a short drive. Even small movements, like moving your shoulders, can be a starting point.

Social connection:

Reach out to a friend, visit a family member, or make plans to meet someone for coffee. Small steps to get things moving; for example, text a friend, "I need you."

Purposeful engagement:

Do tasks that make you feel like time was well spent, such as tidying up, running errands, or offering support to someone else. Starting small, clean off your desk or kitchen table.

Pleasurable activities:

Intentionally engage in activities you usually enjoy, even if the feeling of enjoyment isn't present at first.

With Hikes, when I'm not motivated, I start small by dressing the part. I put on my boots then get in the car. Once I'm in the car I decide where to go.

hosted an amazing BBQ and Resource Fair Saturday offering DMV mobile services, clothing, bike repairs/tune ups, hair cuts, and more!!!!! It was beautiful to see everyone coming together to support the community.

I had a table where I shared about my services. I gave out mental health stickers and cuttings from plants 🌿

I met amazing community professionals and learned about local resources and supports!

Here's who I met there:

was fixing bikes during the event! They are a community bike center. They are a social enterprise of who inspire and empower all kids to lead healthy, active, and happy lives through bicycling.

gave out dental hygiene packs that were sponsored by . They provide discounted dental services to those who are uninsured or under insured.

who offer street outreach, peer coaching, sober living, and warming shelters.

have a program called Project Recovery where they provide care for pets and service animals while their owners undergo substance use treatment.

offer higher education for those interested in careers in behavioral health.

And of course, the hosts who provide accessible health care in the fields of psychiatry and addiction.

I did the bravest thing I could think of. I left the stability and security of medical social work to practice on my own. My experience and the lessons I've learned over the last 9+ years will stick with me forever. The relationships I built are invaluable and I will continue to foster them. I've never been more thankful for the support of my amazing friends and family. AND I am very excited for this new chapter in my career.

My incredibly talented friend helped me celebrate today with a photoshoot!

-Let's Talk-Laughing with coworkers

Laughing reduces stress and releases endorphins which improve mood!!

In high stress work environments, such as healthcare, having close and trusting relationships with your colleagues can reduce isolation as you cope with shared experiences. If you're feeling the burn (signs of burnout) lean into these relationships. Often these coworkers will validate maintaining boundaries at work, like ending your shift on time, and will encourage self care, such as use of PTO!
