The other day a new client asked why I sometimes focus energy on emotional attunement in therapy sessions. This is a person who is very logical and learned at an early age that emotional awareness and expression was not welcome in their childhood home. They learned to intellectualize emotional states of being but are now left overwhelmed when emotions arise and have no way of coping with them. For this person and many others, emotions are confusing and potentially anxiety provoking. People sometimes try to reason their way out of emotional states, rather than learn to speak the language of emotion. Emotions will show up in your body, that’s a fact. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to partner with them rather than stay frustrated and confused by them? Years ago, I lived in Germany but didn’t know much of the language. As I started to learn more of the German language and culture, I became more comfortable in my surroundings. My life became richer, and I experienced life more fully as a result on the connections I made through knowing the German language and culture. I worked on a military installation and met a few military spouses who had no interest in leaving the base and venturing out into the German culture. They were quite content to stay with what was familiar. There is nothing wrong with that perspective, many people choose to stick with what they know. Learning the language of your emotions is a lot like learning a new language and culture. Your life becomes richer and nuanced, and you might experience things that you never thought possible. That doesn’t mean you forget English and everything that is already familiar, you’re simply adding more to your life not subtracting from it.
I love helping clients learn to tune in to their emotions and offer a safe space for emotions to be expressed in the body. Reach out if you want to learn more.
