Supervision is often treated as something to get through.

But it shapes far more than licensure.

It shapes:
– how we make clinical decisions
– how we understand ethics
– whether we burn out or stay
– who we become in this work

In this month’s Leadership Letter, I wrote about a moment many supervisors face:

What do you do when a supervisee escalates during feedback?

Not every rupture is something to process.

Some moments require something else:
containment before exploration.

If you’re in supervision - giving it or receiving it - this one will resonate.

If you’ve been sitting with the quiet thought of
“maybe it’s me…”

Maybe you’re more overwhelmed than you should be.
More tired than you expected to be.
Less sure of yourself than you used to feel.

Before you decide that something is wrong with you, it’s worth looking at the conditions you’re working in.

A lot of what social workers are carrying right now isn’t just personal.
It’s structural.
It’s relational.
It’s systemic.

I created a free reflective workbook for social workers to help make sense of burnout, ethical tension, and the weight of this work in context.

It’s not about fixing yourself.

It’s about seeing more clearly.

Supervision is often treated as something to get through.

But in practice, it’s one of the most powerful spaces we have to shape clinicians, support sustainability, and influence the future of the field.

When we approach it with intention, the impact is significant.

The Summer Clinical Supervision Training cohort begins June 3.

Support is essential in supervision. But it can’t be the only thing.

Without structure, feedback, and accountability, supervision becomes emotionally heavy and less effective.

Strong supervision holds both: care and clarity.

Many supervisors are expected to “figure it out as they go.”

That’s not a personal failure. It’s a structural gap in how our field prepares people for supervision.

Supervision is a distinct skill set, one that requires clarity, structure, and intention.

If you’re feeling that gap, you’re not alone.

The Summer Clinical Supervision Training cohort begins June 3.

Ethics was never meant to make us smaller.

Somewhere along the way, “ethical practice” started feeling like surveillance, compliance, and fear of doing it wrong.

But ethics - at its best - is about clarity, courage, and collective responsibility.

I’ve launched a monthly publication through the Center for Ethical Social Work Practice called The CESWP Leadership Letter.

It’s not about policing clinicians.

It’s about strengthening the structures that allow us to practice with integrity and power supervision that deepens thinking, documentation that reflects real reasoning, leadership that protects sustainability.

The first issue is now live.

The title "Social Worker" isn't just a line on a government document. It is a backbone.

Despite recent federal policy shifts, our value is not determined by a title change. It is defined by the lives we impact, the crises we de-escalate, and the ethical standards we refuse to lower.

At the Center for Ethical Social Work Practice, we know that expertise is not granted by an administration. It is built through years of clinical dedication and showing up for our communities when it matters most.

To our colleagues: Hold the line. To our communities: We are still here. The status may be under fire, but the work remains. We are here to stay.

Most of us were handed a supervisee and told to figure it out.
But the stakes are too high - and the work too complex- to keep winging it.

This training series was built to help you supervise with more clarity, structure, and ethical grounding, whether you’re brand new to the role or years in but still navigating uncertainty.

Level One starts this March.
Join us for something better.

REMINDER THAT WE CANNOT CHARGE ANY COSTS TO MEDICAID COVERED PATIENTS IN COLORADO:

Under Colorado law (C.R.S. § 25.5-4-301) and federal Medicaid regulations, Health First Colorado members may not be billed for covered services, except for applicable Health First Colorado co-pays. Providers must accept Medicaid reimbursement as payment in full.

Balanced billing is not permitted for covered services under any circumstances. This includes situations where Health First Colorado does not reimburse the provider, a claim is denied due to provider error, the provider is not enrolled with Health First Colorado, or the member has signed an advance notice or agreement acknowledging potential non-coverage. A signed advance notice does not override this prohibition.

Providers may only bill a Health First Colorado member for services or medications that are not covered by Health First Colorado. Before charging a member, the provider must have a written and documented agreement in place confirming the member’s agreement to pay out of pocket for the specific non-covered service.

Members cannot lose Health First Colorado coverage if they choose to pay out of pocket for uncovered or covered services.

For additional guidance, visit the Policy Statement: Billing Health First Colorado Members for Services webpage:
