The world has lost an incredible soul - Michel Odent was a fierce supporter of physiologic birth and women’s right to bodily autonomy. 🙌🏼

We are so sorry to hear this news from Michel Odent's family.

"It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr Michel Odent announce his death at the age of 95. Dr Odent was born July 7, 1930, in Bresles, France. He died peacefully in London, England, on August 19, 2025 following a brief illness.

Dr Odent trained as a general surgeon in Paris, and advocated for the demedicalisation of birth whilst in charge of Pithiviers Hospital. In later life, he founded the Primal Health Research Centre in London, and published extensively on topics related to childbirth and early breastfeeding.

He is survived by many loved ones, including his partner Liliana, and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to La Leche League. Dr Odent will be cremated in a private family service with a public memorial to follow in several weeks."

I wanted to give everyone a heads up - I will be taking the next several weeks off to recover. On Tuesday, I’m having “minor” brain surgery to have an intracranial stent placed in my right transverse sinus.

Last year, I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). This rare brain disease is often referred to as “pseudotumor cerebri” due to having similar symptoms to a brain tumor, when one is not present; elevated intracranial pressure (due to extra cerebrospinal fluid), swollen optic nerves, visual disturbances (leading to eventual loss of vision if not treated), sixth nerve palsy, headaches, migraines, dizziness, nausea, pulsatile tinnitus, brain fog, hormone issues, and more.

“Normal” intracranial pressure readings taken during a lumbar puncture are typically between 5-15 cm H20... over 20 is considered high, and over 25 is diagnosed as intracranial hypertension. My opening pressure at diagnosis last summer was 31.... and at my second LP in the ER this spring, my opening pressure was a dangerous 56!!

Because I am allergic to the standard medications, surgical treatment is my only option. I had an angiogram done last month, which confirmed that I am a good candidate for an intracranial stent, to be placed in my right transverse venous sinus & help increase CSF drainage from my brain.

Researchers sought to determine whether weight-based discrimination (dismissive or critical statements about weight, intense scrutiny of weight, blame for weight-related risks, assumptions made about lifestyle or character, difficulties fitting medical equipment) increased probability of cesarean delivery and concluded that it did.

Among 1352 survey respondents, 245 were very high BMI when they became pregnant. In this group, 36% reported experiencing discrimination based on their weight compared with 4% with medium BMI. Experiencing discrimination predicted cesarean delivery with each additional event increasing the odds of cesarean by 7%. An analysis of the interplay among factors found that BMI had a direct effect on experiencing weight-based discrimination, BMI had a direct effect on cesarean delivery, weight discrimination had a direct effect on cesarean delivery, and BMI had an indirect effect on cesarean delivery mediated by its relationship with weight discrimination.
